MINOE – Five Questions With

MINOE shares intoxicating new offering, “Loophole”

Nova Scotia-born, artist to watch MINOE reveals her brand new single, “Loophole.”

Rich in measured reflection, “Loophole” draws on the moments of dissociation MINOE used as a means of coping when she was younger. Intoxicating beats and slick production frame her vocals and dynamic songwriting as a powerful moment of reclaiming her peace.

Sharing more, she said:

“Loophole” explores the feeling of mentally stepping outside yourself when someone is yelling at you, using restraint and distance as a way to survive. I touch on how I really loved this person and I did everything to protect their abuse, hide it away, I let in their negative words and believed them: until I found the loophole: I’m literally just not going to let anything in. Lalalala can’t hear you! . It’s almost a cheeky response to very serious abuse but hey!  Don’t worry, I’m in therapy.

I think it’s very on brand for me – something that makes you wanna dance with super depressing lyrics. If that’s my legacy, I’ll die happy.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi I’m Minoe, I’m an alt-pop artist from Nova Scotia, currently based in Montreal!

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

“loophole” is a dark pop track about tuning out an abusive person. It’s inspired by dissociating and finding your own mental “loophole” around their negativity. I hope it can be applied in many ways for listeners but for me personally, it comes from finding my own way out of an abusive relationship and reclaiming my power.

Walk us through your creative process when creating music.

It’s always different; it could start with a beat, a phrase, or a melody in my head. In this case, I wrote this song a cappella and imagined a couple of prod layers. I brought the vocal to my partner, Phil, and then to my good friend, Housefly! Together they killed it 🙂

Now that the music is out, what does the ‘road ahead’ look like? Beyond tours and videos, what’s one ‘bucket list’ goal you hope to achieve with this release?

My main goal is always for the music to find people – especially young people – who resonate with the lyrics and can turn to this song when they feel alone. I grew up in a rough environment and I hope all my music can be a beacon of hope and understanding for others who have gone through the same. Marketing-wise, it might sound super simple, but I just want to stay consistent and build something I’m proud of a little bit every day. I want this campaign to be slow and steady. I’m not chasing big shows or major moments; I just want to show up every day and give people something valuable.

Every artist has a ‘lightbulb moment’ where things just clicked. Looking back, what’s the one performance or milestone that made you realize, ‘Okay, this is what I was meant to do’?

To be honest, I’ve been writing songs since I was seven years old, and it has always been there; I never wanted anything else growing up. However, I recently took a bit of a backseat and focused on writing for other artists, which I absolutely adore, but I think for the first time in my life I lost sight of my true love. So i feel like I’m having my lightbulb moment right now because I realized how much I’ve missed executing my own vision, and I’m so excited to be back in that role.

We love championing Canadian talent. If you were curating a ‘Must-Listen’ playlist of emerging artists right now, who is the first person you’d add?

It would be impossible to choose one because we have so many incredible upcoming acts, but I have to shout out Lennikim and Gaelle, my incredibly talented friends! Their work is always so polished and amazing. I’ve written a lot with both of them, and it’s a privilege every time.

There’s nothing like the energy of a live room. Where can fans catch you on stage next, and for someone seeing you for the first time, what should they expect from a MINOE live experience?”

This project is really intimate so I’m working on a new live setup right now. I’m excited about live strings, hand-made stage design and nostalgic/analog feelings as a rejection of AI. The show is definitely going to feel cozy and ethereal! I don’t have any confirmed dates right now, but stay tuned on minoemusic.com and my insta @itsminoe for updates. Thank you so much 🙂
