Toronto hard rock band MADLANDS explore narcissism, celebrity culture, and the darker side of social media in their latest single and music video.

Toronto hard rock band MADLANDS have released their latest single and music video, “Everyone’s a Narcissist,” a confrontational look at society’s growing obsession with image, influence, and online attention.

Through heavy guitars, driving rhythms, and provocative visuals, the band challenges the way people idolize public figures while overlooking similar behaviours in themselves.

Inspired by the Greek myth of Narcissus and Echo, the song explores how the pursuit of admiration has evolved in the age of social media, where likes, views, and carefully curated identities often take priority over genuine connection.

MADLANDS Explore Narcissism and Celebrity Culture

The music video for “Everyone’s a Narcissist” brings the song’s themes to life through shattered mirrors and images of seemingly recognizable celebrities and public figures.

As the mirrors break, the visuals suggest a rejection of the personalities society elevates and idolizes. However, the symbolism takes an unexpected turn when the members of MADLANDS appear in those same reflections, only to have their images destroyed as well.

The message is intentionally uncomfortable: those criticizing society’s obsession with image and attention are not necessarily immune to the same behaviours.

Lead vocalist Brent Wirth explains that the song is as much about self-examination as it is about criticizing modern culture.

“The song explores the uncomfortable idea that narcissism isn’t just something we see in celebrities, politicians or the powerful — it exists in all of us.”

Wirth adds that social media has changed the way people seek recognition, often turning personal experiences into opportunities for attention.

For MADLANDS, the song isn’t intended to place the band above the culture they’re examining. Instead, it acknowledges that everyone participates in some way.

The accompanying video expands on the song’s themes, questioning how easily public perception can be shaped by selected photographs, viral clips, and online narratives.

By confronting the gap between appearance and reality, MADLANDS encourage viewers to reconsider how quickly they judge others and whether those judgments reflect their own assumptions.

MADLANDS Prepare Upcoming Album Symphony for the End of Time

Musically, MADLANDS combine modern hard rock with heavy guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and memorable hooks, pairing their energetic sound with thought-provoking lyrical themes.

Previous singles “Witching Hour” and “Armageddon” have helped establish the band’s creative direction, exploring darker aspects of human behaviour through powerful rock arrangements.

“Everyone’s a Narcissist” continues that approach while offering another glimpse of what’s ahead.

MADLANDS are currently preparing their forthcoming album, Symphony for the End of Time, expected in early 2027.

Rather than simply condemning celebrity culture or online vanity, “Everyone’s a Narcissist” leaves listeners with a more challenging question: how often do we recognize in others the very behaviours we struggle to acknowledge in ourselves?
