Toronto Musician Brodie Christ’s New Single, “IDWTBFriends,” is a Confessional, Longing Indie Anthem
Toronto-based indie pop/rock artist Brodie Christ returns with his vulnerable yet bombastic new single “IDWTBFriends,” an intimate and upbeat confession of desire in long-term love.
“Desire is a strange and fickle beast. It comes on intensely and can disappear as fast as it comes,” says Christ. “I wanted to express in this song what, to me, felt like fresh desire in a long-term relationship. I have these memories of early days that were intense, frantic and fumbling. I want more of those. What we are giving each other is not enough. I want more. I want it full time. I need more of you.”
Driven by punchy guitars, a bittersweet melodic hook, and a lyric that refuses to play it cool,
“IDWTBFriends” lands with both emotional precision and sonic punch.
Christ explains:
“The chorus just slaps you, unambiguously, both musically and lyrically.”
Tension and uncertainty pulses through every line of this track.
“Yearning, impatience, and action,” Christ says of the song’s inspiration. “A realization that what is right in front is what is missing and the only way to fill the void is to go after it, romance it, and ask for it.”
Lyrically, the song refuses to hide. “There’s no other way to say to you so straight and true” is a standout line for the artist.
“It’s easy to be self-congratulatory when you’ve written clever lyrics but it’s also too easy to miss the emotional component when you’re trying to be clever. These lyrics have no word play, metaphor, or cleverness. They are precise in expressing their desire and vulnerability. I want you (and I hope you feel the same way too).”
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I am the seventh child in a family of eight kids.
To clarify, my last name is pronounced “Christ”, not “Christ”.
I don’t like getting into an unmade bed.
My first instrument was the drums, but I wanted to write songs, so I had to learn guitar.
The first song I ever wrote at 15 was called, Haystack Country, and it was about leaving our beautiful rural area at the end of a summer.
Both superficially and deeply, I am a fool – the court jester. My first and last inclination is to turn everything into a joke. My music happens in between those places, and it tends to be very introspective and emotionally honest.
I feel like a late bloomer in music. It’s too late for me to be a rockstar, but there’s still time to write some beautiful songs!
“IDWTBFriends” feels both raw and euphoric. What was the moment—or memory—that sparked the first lyric or melody?
You know that feeling when you first like someone and everything is intense and frantic and all consuming? I remember wondering if that feeling was only for new love and just chemical or if it could be created again and again in a relationship. I believe it can be recreated, remade, and re-felt.
The lyric “I want more. I want it full time.” hits hard. What does “more” mean to you in the context of this song—and maybe even beyond the song?
More boners. 24-7. At least that’s what Instagram is selling me.
The closest lyric in the song to this is, “What can I say, I’m a dog for your supple skin with the sweetest taste”. Wanting more is about being a dog – faithfully loyal and relentless – in pursuit of your desire. It’s about recognizing you want something more than what you have, and discovering the difference between the right thing to do and the right thing to do for you.
From a production standpoint, how involved were you in shaping the final sound? Was it a collaborative process, or did you already hear the track in your head?
“IDWTBFriends” was basically fully formed from the beginning. In the original demo, I played the instruments and sang all the parts. The chorus always hit like it does now but the band brought to the final version more emotion. We go from the gently swooning intro to the smacking confessional chorus and all more impactful. The essence of the song is the same, with added beauty now!
How does this single fit into your broader artistic evolution? Would you say it marks a new era for Brodie Christ?
“IDWTBFriends” is the beginning of a trajectory of personal emotional liberation. I’ve shed a lot of mental weight and personal burdens over the last year, so I can start to say out loud the things that I am most afraid of saying. That’s where freedom comes from. I am more open to expressing myself than ever before, so (fingers crossed) things might get weird!
Can fans expect a larger project or EP built around the themes introduced in this single?
If people like this song, they can expect more of the same honesty, vulnerability, and good melodies from (imo) the greatest band that has ever been formed. And maybe some balloons and/or explosions. Come along! We’re going into space, babyyyyyy!
