Last night, German pop-rockers Tokio Hotel made their grand return to Montreal! The band, who hit major fame in the 2000s with their emo-rock songs in German, was still active the past few years, but less on the North American radar. But this fall, they embarked on a very limited run of dates in North and Latin America. The last time they played Montreal was in 2008, so it’s without surprise that the Olympia was packed to the brim with hardcore fans ready for their 16-year reunion!

No opening act needed, as the crowd was chanting the band’s name, and sporadically breaking into screams at the slightest hint of movement around the stage. The curtain dropped shortly after 8pm, revealing Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav to the sounds of White Lies.

Although lacking in some of the older hits (we were hoping to hear Schrei, their iconic breakout hit), the setlist packed a punch, and showed the band’s turn from alt-rock to a more electro-pop style. Frontman Bill Kaulitz commanded the crowd, as he strutted around in many elaborate costumes. The crowd was in a frenzy from beginning to end, truly showing Montreal’s special love for Tokio Hotel (and likely why we were lucky enough to get a tour stop on a run limited to major markets).
