Puma June Releases New Video for “My Body My Problem”

An Uncompromising Anthem of Self-Expression

On June 27th, 2024, Toronto-based artist Puma June celebrated the release of the music video for her latest single, “My Body My Problem” with a show at the Division 88. The video is a visually striking piece of high fashion rebellion, which not only challenges societal expectations but also celebrates the pursuit of creative freedom and shameless ownership of one’s body and identity. I had the opportunity to sit down with Puma June to discuss the video and delve deeper into its significance.

Directed by Arden Grier, the music video for “My Body My Problem” enhances the spirit of the track with styled visuals. The video successfully serves as an unyielding exploration of control versus a society that seems to relentlessly place constraints on self-expression.

In our conversation, Puma June delved into the personal and societal inspirations behind the video. She shares,

“No matter how I expressed myself, I never really feel received, and I always feel policed… Sometimes I wear baggy clothes and “I’m not feminine enough”, but if I show too much skin “I’m slutty”. It sort of goes along with the, “You’re dressed like that, so you’re asking for it” anger that has resurfaced and spread to all sides… It’s a very angry song for me”

This frustration is apparent throughout the video, where every frame seems to echo her defiance against these limiting perceptions.

From the very first shot, Puma June commands attention as she settles herself onto a chaise longue wearing a gilded corset top and stockings. She is the fierce core of the video and repeatedly places herself in positions ripe for criticism, but punkily refuses to give a shit. At the heart of “My Body My Problem” is Puma June’s exploration of personal empowerment amidst moments of vulnerability. Reflecting on her vulnerable moments while filming, she expressed her discomfort in wearing the corset featured at the beginning, further enforcing the message of breaking free from imposed norms.

“That look was so out of my comfort zone,” she admits, “but it’s part of the statement—challenging what’s expected and reclaiming my body on my terms.”

With the release of “My Body My Problem”, Puma June sets the stage for what is to come. Blending elements of pop, R&B, and subtle jazz, “My Body My Problem” showcases her defiant edge and versatility as an artist.

“I just want to make music that I would want to listen to, and I feel like I finally am with this song. I feel so excited about it.”

“My Body My Problem” is not just a feast for the eyes, but also a thought-provoking piece of art that demands conversation. With its poignant visuals and pertinent themes, the song and video cements Puma June’s place as a fearless voice in today’s music. She’s an artist worth watching out for.
