Tyrants Demise To Play Decimate Metalfest
Welcome to our exclusive interview with Tyrants Demise! Formed back in 2006 in the depths of a Steinbach, Manitoba basement by Jay Friesen on bass and Mike Pries on guitar, the band’s journey truly began. It wasn’t until their relocation to Winnipeg that their lineup solidified, with the addition of drummer Steve Rumpli in 2007 and vocalist Keith (Kut) Proulx in 2008. Despite a revolving door of guitar players over the years, the band’s essence remained intact. Now, in 2024, after a six-year hiatus, Duane Mcpherson returns to complete the current lineup.
The band is set to play Decimate Metalfest which takes place in Millet, Alberta on June 7-8, 2024.
First off, care to introduce yourselves to our readers?
We’re Tyrants Demise a 5 piece metal band from Winnipeg Manitoba. Formed in 2006, back from a 6-year hiatus. Recently re-released 3 songs from our first EP and a single with some new music coming for 2024.
Tell us a bit about your latest release.
Our last 4 releases have been 3 re-releases of older songs that were hits live. mother of massacre, slaughter, and ditchpig. The third is a single of an older track that we decided to record when we decided to get the band back together in 2023.
As a band, how important is it for you to perform at festivals like Decimate, where diversity and inclusion are celebrated, including featuring youth bands?
Playing at metal festivals such as Decimate is huge for exposure as well as meeting new and old friends/fans. It’s been super beneficial for us in the past playing some of Canada’s other metal festivals. The people are great. We have been fortunate to meet so many awesome humans through these experiences. When we got the chance to play Decimate it was a no-brainer and we went for it. The fact that they have youth bands is an added bonus. Seeing and being able to meet the new wave of metal in Canada is always exciting.
Have you had the chance to check out the lineup for Decimate Metalfest, and if so, are there any bands you’re particularly excited to see perform?
We have, we have some friends in MVLGRAVE, Syryn, Kelevra, and Vaegon. Always great to catch up with them and watch them tear it up as we all live in different provinces throughout Canada. One of the bands I am excited to check out that I have not got the chance to see is Volt out of Fort Mac in Alberta.
How does your band approach crafting a setlist for a festival like Decimate Metalfest, considering the range of bands and genres represented in the lineup?
To be perfectly honest we aren’t ever worried about creating a set list that appeals to bands we are playing with. All our songs are heavy, and upbeat with melodies. We do our thing, try to perform as best we can, and hope people like it.
Last but not least, what advice do you have for metal bands just starting out?
Advice for bands just starting out is pretty simple. Just keep on plugging. It’s a grind but a fun one. Shameless promotion always helps too.
