Australian OG deathcore legends Thy Art is Murder have embarked on a massive North American tour in support of their latest record Godlike. The Godlike Tour features support from Angelmaker, Signs of the Swarm, and Snuffed On Sight. This heavy-hitting package made a stop at the Phoenix in Toronto on April 12, 2024.
Opening the show was the slamming death metal band Snuffed On Sight. This band has been drumming up a lot of attention among the new-old school death metal scene online and their performance lived up to the hype. Their signature sound of slamming death metal with a hardcore attitude has made them an act to follow. Their songs are short, sweet, and full of catchy hooks that induce head-bobbing moments. Right from the get-go, the crowd was incredibly exuberant. The audience erupted into moshing, two steps, and circle pits. As time goes on, I am sure that Snuffed On Sight will become a staple within the genre.
Signs of the Swarm has been one of the most hyped deathcore bands in recent times. Their latest album Amongst the Low & Empty has made waves and cemented itself as a contemporary classic. The setlist consisted mostly of their newest material which sounds amazing in the live setting. The energy that exudes from Signs of the Swarm is amazing and a sight to behold. It is very clear why they are such a powerhouse in the deathcore scene. Despite a series of membership changes, Signs of the Swarm is still going strong and a blast to see live.
Angelmaker is easily my favourite deathcore group. I love this band. Every song was highly energetic and totally captured the attention of the crowd. Angelmaker is highly energetic when they play and it is wickedly entertaining to experience. They played a lot of the fan favourites while mostly focusing on some of their earlier material. Despite not playing much from their newest record, the setlist flowed expertly and there was never a dull moment. I can not express how satisfied I was with their show. I highly recommend you see this band anytime you can. They are simply incredible.
Thy Art is Murder is finally back after a tumultuous period. Their previous vocalist CJ McMahon was let go due to transphobic comments. In the wake of this incident, vocalist Tyler Miller, previously from Aversions Crown, has joined the band. I am happy to report that Thy Art is Murder has come back in full force and their live show is as good as ever. The presence of Tyler within the band is an excellent fit. His performance on the old songs fits very well and the songs from Godlike feel like his own. Given that Thy Art is Murder is a band with a legacy, their setlist consists of songs spanning their entire discography. Plenty of fan favourites are jammed into the setlist and they hit all the beats. It was wonderful to see this legendary act bounce back after the loss of their iconic vocalist. I highly recommend even the most skeptical of fans give Thy Art is Murder a chance. They will not disappoint.
The Godlike tour is an excellent showcase of the state of deathcore. Every band is on top of their game and packs a perfect setlist. I couldn’t recommend this tour enough. If you were worried about the state of Thy Art is Murder, fret not, they are as good as ever and they have returned to form.
