Cory Stewart – Five Questions With

Toronto’s Cory Stewart Returns for “One More Day With You” in Raw and Reflective New Dance-Pop Single

On April 5, 2024, Canadian pop singer and writer Cory Stewart made his triumphant return to music with his latest dance-pop single, “One More Day With You”. This heartfelt anthem, written during a poignant moment in Stewart’s life, encapsulates the raw emotion and gratefulness for one more day with a cherished loved one.

“One More Day With You” is more than just a song; it’s a reflection of Stewart’s self-discovery. Written in the summer of 2023 during a time of uncertainty and emotional turmoil, the track captures the essence of Stewart’s experience as he faced the possibility of losing someone dear to him. Infused with an introspective earthy essence and enriched by nature-based sound samples (recorded by Stewart), the song immerses listeners in a world of emotion and self-discovery.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Cory Stewart: a Toronto-based pop singer, songwriter, and producer who creates wickedly witty and sometimes insightful music that you often can’t get out of your head. I started studying music at the ripe age of seven years old, and have been performing for anyone who’ll watch (but not in like, an annoying way hehe) my entire life. I started releasing music professionally six years ago – and am about to celebrate my 40th song release, “One More Day With You” on April 5!

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

‘One More Day With You’ is the first single off of my upcoming (as of yet untitled) sophomore album! This song was written in the summer of 2023 and centers around the concept of taking something so precious to us for granted in our lives and then being faced with a moment where we may lose it. Whether that’s a parent, loved one, friend, or even ourselves – this song is a reminder for me to cherish those I hold close. Interestingly, this song started out as a ballad but soon evolved into the banger dance track that it is today. The track also features some real-life sounds I captured throughout nature – giving it a really earthy, yet fresh and modern feel.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

I’m always on the lookout for little sparks of inspiration in my day-to-day, and I stash them away in my iPhone notes app. Right now, I’ve got about 32 potential album titles and around 143 song ideas (though I stopped counting after a while). Inspiration hits me from all angles, and I love it when an idea really makes me stop and think. Once I catch onto something, I start playing around with melodies that capture the vibe of the idea, and then I dive into writing lyrics. The best part about songwriting? There’s no one right way to do it. It’s all about embracing the unpredictability, and that’s what keeps me hooked on the whole process.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

Earlier this year, I made a trip down to Saint Augustine in Florida, and was able to shoot, produce, edit, and direct a music video to accompany the track! I’m very proud of this video because it’s the first time I’ve done everything myself in a really cinematic way.

There’ll also be so many more single releases coming your way, and I’m planning some exciting shows across Canada this summer/fall.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

Back in the early days of my career, I got this awesome opportunity to open for Boy George in Montreal. When the offer came in, I didn’t even have to think twice — I was all in! I had just a 20-minute slot, but the highlight for me was getting to meet him afterward. I was so pumped that all I managed to blurt out was, “Thanks for paving the way for us Queer musicians in the industry.” And you know what he said? “I was just being me.” That really stuck with me. Now, whenever I’m making career choices, I always come back to that: Just be yourself, above everything else.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

I’m going to cheat and highlight three of my fave Queer Toronto-based musicians! If you like rock music, check out the ridiculously talented band Madame Psychosis – they’re masters at creating really hooky and timeless tracks. If R&B is more your thing, be sure to check out IAMREBELWILL, a truly gifted songwriter and vocalist; and don’t miss any opportunity to see the amazing R. Flex perform if you get the chance!
