Commenting on the project, Andrea Superstein expressed her love for the project, saying:

“Between the trauma of birthing a baby and all of the physical changes a mother goes through coupled with balancing a job, feeling out your new role and your place within the world, mothering can be a very isolating experience. These dark times spurred a lot of questions. I wanted to know if the struggles I endured were universal or just mine alone. The album shines a true light on the complicated, delicate, beautiful, traumatic and messy journey that is motherhood.”

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi everyone, I’m Andrea Superstein, an indie/jazz/soul vocalist and composer currently living in Vancouver BC.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

Oh Mother was inspired by my own experience as a mother. When everyone was telling me this was going to be the best time of my life, it was a very dark time for me Contrary to popular belief, mothering can be a very isolating experience. These dark times spurred a lot of questions. And so several years later, I started asking them. I wanted to know if the struggles I endured were universal, were they a sign of the times, or just mine alone.

I interviewed close to 100 mothers (both informally and formally on camera) and based on these conversations I wrote music: some songs are one person’s story, others are of the collective consciousness.

Oh Mother is my story and the story of many others a song cycle tribute to the undertold yet very real stories that mothers face.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

It really depends – each song has its own process. The song All I Need started with a synth loop that I created using my midi keyboard. Who Are You Now started with one line of lyrics and a melody, I Carry Your Heart drew inspiration from a poem. Some songs take years to write, others just present themselves and are done in an hour.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

We released 3 singles prior to the official album drop and those videos (which I love so so much) are on my YouTube channel.I will likely release a few more over the spring while we tour. I’m trying to post more band interviews periodically so fans can get up close and personal with the collaborators and really get behind the music.

And yes, tour dates happening across Canada from March to May, and then hopefully more next year as well.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

It has really been all about the process – I don’t think there was a “big break” moment for me. It’s been all about the small steps – I learn new things from each tour, each recording, and each relationship. Along the way there have been so many people willing to go to bat for me – journalists who championed for me, festival producers who went out of their way to introduce me to other industry individuals, playing gigs with musicians I admire. A huge highlight for me was touring Europe last year and showcasing at Jazzahead.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

There is so much great music out there. I’m really enjoying Dominique Fils-Aimé’s and Denielle Bassels new albums. Monica Freire has a beautiful new single out as well.
