FICTION – Five Questions With

Montréal-Based FICTION Unveils Captivating New Single “Slower”

Montréal-based band Fiction has captivated audiences with the release of their latest single “Slower”. The slow-burning track offers a glimpse into the band’s ever-evolving sound and serves as the first taste of a forthcoming EP slated for a 2024 release.

Co-produced by Zak Colello, the song’s slow tempo and evolving textures give the impression of being slowly enveloped, inspired by the band’s lead Marlie Robertson’s real-life experiences with vertigo.

“Slower is about feeling stuck in a fast moving capitalist society. It comes from the need to slow things down and take the time to fall in love with all the details of a moment. The song answers a feeling of overwhelmingness”.

In line with the newly released single, Fiction is set to deliver an alluring concert at Le Bal du Lézard in Québec City on March 30. Le Bal du Lézard provides the perfect backdrop and intimate setting that perfectly complements the band’s immersive musical style. With anticipation building for both the single release and the live show, Fiction continues to solidify their presence in the Québec music scene and beyond.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Marlie Robertson. I am a musician based in Montreal. I am mostly trained as a drummer but I also sing and compose.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

Slower is about feeling stuck in a fast-moving capitalist society. It comes from the need to slow things down and take the time to fall in love with all the details of a moment. The song answers a feeling of overwhelmingness.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process?

Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow? The process is usually very disjointed. I often get ideas when I am awake really late and can’t seem to make myself go to sleep. I grab my synth or guitar and start jamming with my thoughts. I recorded a bunch of these ideas on my phone. I listen to them weeks or months later and, if I find something that speaks to me, I start working on it more seriously. Then I show the songs to my bandmates and we work out the arrangements.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

We have some shows booked for the spring. We will be in Quebec City on March 30th at Le Bal du Lézard. Other dates will be announced soon. I am also planning on releasing more music in the following months.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

Recording the STAIRS album « Until the Dreams Come Through » was an important learning experience for me. Working with Oscar, Zak, and Vincent on this album made me discover a whole range of possibilities in arrangements and tones. We did a lot of experimenting together and I learned so much from them.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

Charlotte Brousseau. She is an amazing folk artist from Quebec City. She writes beautiful lyrics, and her music really moves me.
