Jaya Bremer shares dreamy soft-electro “Apartment 4”

Dream-pop artist Jaya Bremer (formerly JAYA) from Victoria, BC, has unveiled her single, “Apartment 4.”

Teaming up with producers Austin Tufts (of Montreal band Braids) and Victoria’s Chris Neal, Jaya has dove deep into expansive synth-scapes on the single, drawing from the dreamy electro worlds of acts like Metronomy paired with the heart-on-sleeve ethos of Robyn.

Jaya shares the inspiration behind the track:

“I went through a long drawn out reno-viction and was forced to leave an apartment that I had lived in and loved for four years. I wrote this song on my last night there, as a love letter and a goodbye. I wrote the song to the apartment as though it were a living being, which in a way, my grief around the loss of it felt akin to. I felt acutely aware that it was the end of an era, and I was already mourning it. It’s a tribute to an apartment that felt like a living entity.”

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Jaya Bremer, a dream-pop artist from Victoria, BC. I’ve been a part of the Victoria music scene for nearly a decade — fronting and managing a gypsy jazz quintet, a Patsy Cline tribute band, an indie-rock band called Wise Child, and most recently launching my own solo project with the release of my 2020 album Everybody’s Getting Married. My newest single, “Apartment 4”, draws from the electro worlds of acts like Metronomy with the heart-on-sleeve ethos of Robyn.  I worked on the production of the track with Austin Tufts (of the Montreal band Braids) and Victoria’s Chris Neal.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

I went through a long, drawn-out reno-viction and was forced to leave an apartment that I had lived in and loved for four years. I wrote this song on my last night there, as a love letter and a goodbye. I wrote the song to the apartment as though it were a living being, which in a way, my grief around the loss of it felt akin to. I felt acutely aware that it was the end of an era, and I was already mourning it. It’s a tribute to an apartment that felt like a living entity. The track features myself on synth and vocals, Chris Neal on synth, Austin Tufts on drums, and Wise Child bandmate Roger Eldridge on guitar.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve put a pause on live shows while I finish writing, producing, and recording the second half of my album, which is set to be released in Spring 2024. I am revamping my live show to capture the sound and aesthetic of this new collection of songs, Apartment 4 being the first release from the LP.

If given the chance, which Canadian artist would you love to work with in the future?

Hannah Georgas. I have loved her music for the past decade. Her vocal style, the emotional intimacy of it, and her songwriting has been very impactful on my own, and it would be such a joy to collaborate with her on literally ANYTHING!

What’s your goal for 2024?

My goal for 2024 is to release my album and perform regularly on the Island and the lower mainland to support its release 🙂
