Rebecca Sichon PLAYS WITH THE DICHOTOMY OF LOVE IN NEW SINGLE “PICKING PETALS”
604 Records introduces their latest 604 Sessions alumna, emerging R&B artist Rebecca Sichon with the release of the irresistibly smooth “Picking Petals,” available for streaming now. The release is a product of 604 Record’s annual song camp, created to foster an atmosphere of creativity and opportunity for unsigned artists. Exploring the dichotomy of finding love, “Picking Petals” was co-written by Sichon and Colin Janz, and is the first of two singles to be released from the project.
“On Picking Petals I wanted to explore the fun (and not so fun) side of the age-old question, “Does he love me? Does he love me not,” says Sichon. “It’s my playful take on the back and forth we sometimes experience with new love against an upbeat electro-pop sound.”
Influenced by the R&B, jazz, and Eastern European folk music she grew up listening to, Rebecca Sichon displays a unique R&B pop sound that tugs on heartstrings with every note. Originally from the city of Mission in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley and now living in the heart of Vancouver, Sichon has been writing and recording music since the ripe age of 19. Now, the ambitious young talent has released more than 12 singles, and two EPs, and performed well over 200 shows including an unprecedented 25 Sofar Sounds shows over the past 12 months. She has showcased on a multitude of stages at Toronto’s Canadian Music Week and was named the Fraser Valley Music Awards’ 2020 & 2021 Pop Artist of the Year, as well as the 2022 FVMA R&B Artist of the Year.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey! I’m a singer-songwriter from Vancouver, BC. I have been involved with and inspired by music my whole life, thanks to my very musical family. I grew up in a Ukrainian household so was exposed to traditional Ukrainian music, classical, soul, and jazz which all inspire my signature sound. I play piano, guitar, and ukulele to help me write and accompany myself on stage. Ever since I could first walk and talk, I’ve loved being up on a stage performing for people, and still very much do. When I’m not singing, writing, or performing, I am caring for my indoor plants, sewing, or exploring nature.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
“Picking Petals” was written as a part of the 604 Records Songwriting Camp that I had the opportunity to be a part of this year. It was written with Colin Janz, a producer/writer on their roster! When writing this song, we both wanted to go for an alternative concept for a love song, specifically about the act of picking petals and saying “He loves me, he loves me not”. It was an unusual idea but it challenged me to think outside of the box and relate my own feelings to it. The song progresses into the ideology of how new love can seem like it’s all “rainbows and fairytales” but the reality is, you need to water and nurture love in order for it to succeed (and grow!).
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
I have been writing music since I was ten years old and over the years my topics have matured alongside me; from love songs to songs about my mental health as well as self-reflections that have helped me get through tough times. I call my songs “Musical Diary Entries” as that’s always felt like the most authentic name for them. I pull inspiration from my day-to-day feelings and being that I am an emotional person it’s not usually hard for me to reach and grasp something that’ll inspire a tune.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
I have a show with Waveland R&B in Vancouver, BC on October 14th and am playing alongside two amazing, soulful artists, Mar Emmanuel & Ahsia. As of now, that’s the only show I have going on but if I announce any new ones, they’ll be on my website! www.rebeccasichon.com
What’s your goal for 2024?
I hope to release my debut album in late fall 2024! In addition to this, I hope to play as many shows as possible and collaborate with lots of new people. It’s going to be an awesome year of growth and that I am certain of.
