Let’s see what the future looks like in this week’s music update, known as Zach’s Picks Of The Week. The place on the internet where I believe you will find the best new Canadian music. Here in this article, we will feature my top five favourites from this last week. For each of them, you will be able to see the clip from this week’s video, which should be posted just below us. Let’s begin with an incredible duo from Spruce Grove, releasing their first single of 2023. Jenesia has unveiled their latest single, “Hideaway,” across all your favourite streaming platforms. The song is an emotional ballad about love that can withstand life’s ups and downs. This Alberta dynamic duo has continued to put out emotion-driven and thought-provoking songs as independent artists since their 2018 debut. Next up on my list will be Vancouver/Surrey, BC, first nation singer-songwriter Alexis Lynn. She is a proud feminist and mental health advocate and has revealed her latest single, “Something To Prove,” to streaming platforms. On this track, rising-star pop artist Alexis explores the personal struggle she’s experienced as a bisexual woman. She who’s very open and accepting of her sexuality outwardly but, on the inside, still suffers from the biases of the mainstream, especially when it comes to the male gaze. Making our way into my top three, we have Nova Scotia-based singer-songwriter Keven Daken. He is back in full force for 2023 with his brand new single, “Living Inside Of Lonely,” which you can find on all streaming sites now. It’s a story about a young woman who has found herself in an emotional rut after her relationship ended. J Richard Hutt produced it in Kitchener, ON, at the famed Cedartree Recording Studio. Another Vancouver-based artist that I’d like to introduce you to today is called Little Destroyer, and they are a punk rock trio. They have shared their unhinged new video for “xbar,” which was taken from their 1134 record late last year. Blurry and provocative, the new video directed by Heather Saitz shares a tantalizing glimpse into the debaucherous world of Little Destroyer tour antics and electrifying live performances. My final recommendation will be highlighting, not a musician. But I would like to introduce you to the incredible Vancouver-based director, Alexander Sharp, whose work will be our last recommendation this week, plus our interview with Alexander. Recently he revealed his latest video that he worked on, “Salvation” by Josh Jones & Trevor Kidd, which you can be found across all streaming platforms now. Alexander has been creating works of art stings his first dramatic short film, “Thank You.” It was even recognized by Vision Quest, a rehabilitation program for addicts that screens the film as part of the process of recovery.
