Top Five Ontario-based artists that we’ve covered in 2022, as chosen by Canadian Beats Media Editor, Jenna Melanson

This week’s Top Five is all about the Top 5 Ontario-based artists we’ve covered in 2022.

This feature is strictly for artists, not bands, and we highly recommend you check each of the artists out!

Chad Price

Chad Price 1

Emerging Toronto, ON-based Pop R&B artist and the 2022 Toyota Searchlight winner Chad Price has released his brand new album titled Introversion.

Chad shares,

“I’m incredibly proud of this album and proud of myself for reaching emotional and creative depths that I was too afraid to reach for in the past. This one feels like an actual representation of who I really am and all the things that swirl around in my head that I’m usually apprehensive to talk about as an introvert. For me, this is how I’ve always wanted to present myself to the world”

Toronto folk-pop artist Alexandra Babiak has unveiled her single, “Look Right Through,” from her soon-to-be-released album, Magical Thinking.

Alexandra shares,

“Sometimes with loss comes perspective, and other times it creates more confusion. This song was an exploration of that for me. What happens after death? What happens to the people who are left behind? How do you keep living, and I mean really living, not just floating from day to day?

I think the lyrics are sad, but I don’t think the message is sad. I think it’s a journey from a low place, into a place of curiosity, so to me that is a positive thing.”

Mike Legere

Mike Legere

Nova Scotia-born, Toronto-based folk-rock artist Mike Legere has released a shimmering and poignant new single, “Kindness Heroic.”

Mike shares,

“I wrote “Kindness Heroic” in the months surrounding the death of one of the most important people in my life. We called Silvia May Ring our babysitter, but she became family, and we stayed close throughout the years until her death. The song is about the impact she had on my life, the absence she left behind, and the lifelong struggle of grasping with mortality in pieces, both in bigger dramatic moments, and in the quiet of a long goodbye.”

Julian Taylor

Julian Taylor 1

Celebrated Canadian musician Julian Taylor recently released “Wide Awake,” a new single from his extraordinary sophomore solo album coming in October 2022.

Julian shares,

“So many people close to me had been dealing with loss in their lives,” says Taylor. “I was feeling for them. I’d been dealing with my own thoughts and feelings about who I am and what’s important to me. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life. I deal with feelings of regret. Sometimes, I unintentionally live inside my own head too often; those thoughts don’t really help me with my own mental stability, and they’ve caused people around me harm as well. I now know that what I think about has a lot to do with my own happiness and the energy that I put out into the world. I now know that I’m perfect in all my imperfection, and that everything that’s happened needed to happen exactly the way that it did… We are interwoven, and we’re all so fortunate to be a part of the universal fabric of life. When I look at things that way, I’m so grateful for everything, and for everyone who’s ever shown me love. I can only hope that I’ve repaid the favor in some way.”
