Fresh out of university, Toronto-based singer/songwriter and producer Lyle Kam channels sonic inspiration from artists like Lauv, Jeremy Zucker, and Charlie Puth. After the success of his debut EP Folly – featuring the Tik Tok viral single “Unlove” – Lyle is returning in 2022 with a fresh batch of music featuring his trademark introspection about love, loss, and belonging.
“what if i had told you” is the only ballad in the upcoming EP, and Lyle’s aim with this song was for it to feel raw and intimate because of how personal the topic is. There’s the obvious sadness and wistfulness of the lyrics, but beyond that, there’s a more subtle meaning behind them. The lyrics also signify the understanding that maybe there’s nothing left to salvage of the relationship, that it ran its course, and it’s only a matter of time before two people who were close become strangers.
“This song really taught me to go after and fight for the things you want before it’s too late,” says Lyle. “You can’t guarantee that someone who has always been in your life will always be in your life. It’s a general life lesson that life is too short to always be questioning yourself.”
