Twin-Fin Celebrate the Art of Storytelling on Shakin Cats
Nearly a decade after the release of their acclaimed 2016 album Whisky Wine and Venom Love, London, Ontario’s Twin-Fin return with Shakin Cats, a three-song EP that captures everything the band has always done best: telling unforgettable stories through a vibrant blend of swing, rockabilly, blues, and jazz—or, as they proudly call it, “Swingabilly.”
Rather than simply marking their return, Shakin Cats celebrates the people, places, and spirit that have shaped both the band and the music community they’ve proudly called home for years.
The EP’s title track is a heartfelt tribute to London’s rich musical heritage. Named in honour of Shakin’ Katz, the legendary CHRW radio program that championed rockabilly and roots music for generations of listeners, the song also pays homage to the many beloved music venues the city has lost over the years. More importantly, it celebrates the resilience of the musicians, promoters, radio hosts, venue owners, and loyal fans whose passion has kept London’s live music scene thriving.
That sense of community is balanced by Twin-Fin’s trademark storytelling on the EP’s other two tracks. “Wrong Side of Town” began as an inside joke inspired by the band’s pre-Twin-Fin bass player, who often talked about writing a song by that title but never did. After his retirement, the band finally brought the long-promised song to life, turning an unfinished idea into a playful tribute to one unforgettable character.
Meanwhile, “Life on Mars” draws from guitarist Paul Wickerson’s memories of working overnight shifts at Toronto’s iconic Mars Diner. Working from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m., seven days a week, he encountered a revolving cast of colourful late-night patrons whose stories, personalities, and larger-than-life characters eventually found their way into the song.
At the heart of Twin-Fin is a shared love of storytelling. Whether drawing inspiration from local music history, unforgettable personalities, or everyday experiences, the band’s songs are rooted in real people and places, brought to life with warmth, wit, and exceptional musicianship.
Featuring Dana MacCabe (vocals, guitar), Cole G. Benjamin (vocals, saxophone), Paul Wickerson (guitar, vocals), Eric Roelofsen (upright bass, vocals), and Brad Ondrovcik (drums), Twin-Fin have built a loyal following throughout Ontario with their energetic live performances and distinctive songwriting. Along the way, the band has earned multiple industry accolades, including nominations for CHRW Radio’s Album of the Year, Artist of the Year at the Jack Richardson London Music Awards, the Toronto Independent Music Awards, and multiple Forest City London Music Awards, including a 2026 nomination for Fan Favourite.
After nearly nine years away from the studio, Shakin Cats isn’t about looking backward with nostalgia—it’s about celebrating the stories, friendships, and musical community that continue to inspire Twin-Fin today. It’s proof that while venues may close and years may pass, great songs—and the people who keep them alive—have a remarkable way of enduring.
