Romantic Folk Country-Tinged Ballad Arrives Alongside Debut EP Going Forward, Looking Back

At just 17 years old, Pitt Meadows, BC singer-songwriter Becca Stefanson is already demonstrating a remarkable ability to connect with listeners through thoughtful storytelling and emotionally honest songwriting. Her debut EP, Going Forward, Looking Back, offers a collection of reflective folk-country songs that explore memory, growth, and the experiences that shape us. Released alongside the EP, the single “How I Feel” showcases Stefanson’s gift for vivid lyrical detail and intimate storytelling, capturing the ache of longing through a beautifully understated performance. We caught up with Becca to discuss the inspiration behind the new music, the lessons she learned while creating her debut release, and where her artistic journey is headed next.

Congratulations on the release of Going Forward, Looking Back! How does it feel to finally share your debut EP with the world?

It feels so unreal. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the support my community, family, and friends have shown me.

The title Going Forward, Looking Back suggests a balance between reflection and moving ahead. What does that phrase mean to you personally?

Going Forward, Looking Back means that life never stops moving and you can’t take a moment for granted but it’s also okay to look back at past memories and see how far you’ve grown as an individual.

You’ve said that you noticed a common thread connecting all six songs on the EP. What were some of the themes or emotions that kept appearing as you wrote these songs?

The emotions that were strung between each song were the heartaches that may come whether it’s reminiscing on moments in life, past experiences, and relationships.

Your latest single “How I Feel” is a song about longing and imagined heartbreak. What drew you to explore an emotion you hadn’t necessarily experienced firsthand?

My friends always come to me wanting an ear to talk to and with that I decided to explore the emotion of heartbreak because I wanted people to truly connect and feel from my lyrics.

The EP was recorded, produced, and mixed by your father, Todd Stefanson. What was it like working so closely with a family member on such a personal project?

I think being able to work with someone as close as my father was extremely comfortable. My father was there every step of the way lending his hands to help me complete this project. I was able to record in a space that felt like home.

As a young artist releasing your first major project, what have you learned about yourself through this process?

I’ve learned that things don’t come as easy as they seem. To do great things you have to have determination, passion, and an open mind to learn from mistakes and improve yourself.

Looking ahead, do you feel like this EP represents the beginning of your sound, or do you already see yourself exploring new directions on future releases?

Although I do think this EP represents my sound, there are many different paths and I think trying new things only adds to experience. I guess we will only have to wait and see! Thanks so much for the interview!
