WITH HER NEWEST COUNTRY SINGLE “I’LL BE THE COWBOY”, MARTINA DAWN LEANS ON FREEDOM AND RESILIENCE TO EXIT EMOTIONALLY VACANT RELATIONSHIPS
Canadian country artist Martina Dawn is pleased to share her newest single, “I’ll Be the Cowboy”, which is currently on all streaming platforms.
Written by Martina and fellow artist Hannah Gazso, “I’ll Be the Cowboy” was produced by JUNO Award winner Russell Broom.
As Martina’s first single of the year, the track weaves together a stripped-back country production, an introspective atmosphere, and emotive storytelling to explore empty, unfulfilling relationships and the inner courage needed to move on.
Martina says,
“Hannah suggested the title, I loved it, and we built on the idea of feeling helpless in a relationship where a partner is physically available, but not emotionally present. As cowboys typically symbolize freedom and resilience, this song is about overcoming this emotional gap by ‘being the cowboy’ and bettering yourself, even if that means putting an end to the relationship.”
“I’ll Be the Cowboy” is the eighth single to date for the Devon, Alberta-based country singer and songwriter.
At 22 years old, Martina has already earned over 350K Spotify streams, had three singles in rotation on SiriusXM Top of the Country Radio, and won the Youth Horizon Award at the 2022 Country Music Alberta Awards. Her enthusiastic efforts to connect with fans online have also earned over 6 million organic social media impressions.
On stage, she has played twice at Country Thunder Alberta, as well as Big Valley Jamboree, the Ponoka Stampede, and the Country Music Alberta Awards Show.
More recently, Martina completed the 3 For 1 Tour of BC and Alberta alongside artist friends Jordyn Pollard and Beamer Wigley. Next up, she’ll be supporting “I’ll Be the Cowboy” with performances at the Ponoka Stampede (June 26th), the Lethbridge Canada Day celebration (July 1st), and Taste of Edmonton (July 17th).
With a slate of new music planned for Martina during the rest of 2026, “I’ll Be the Cowboy” is the latest showcase of Martina’s true-to-life storytelling and she wants fans to feel its relevance.
She says,
“It is strong and brave to leave something you love so much that isn’t working anymore, and it’s just as important to lift our friends up who are in similar circumstances and encourage them to be their own cowboys.”
Review
“I’ll Be the Cowboy” is a stripped-back country single that leans into storytelling and emotional restraint, using minimal production to keep the focus on its lyrical core. The song opens with a familiar barroom attraction that quickly reveals emotional imbalance, shifting from romantic idealization into clear-eyed recognition of a partner who can show charm but not consistency.
The chorus anchors the track with its central reversal: “I’ll be the cowboy.” Instead of waiting for change, the narrator chooses independence and walks away from a relationship that no longer offers emotional presence. This theme continues in the second verse, where imagery like “walking along the gravel” and “tying up what you unraveled” reinforces closure and forward motion rather than lingering heartbreak.
Sonically understated, the production supports Martina’s vocal delivery and lets the lyrics lead. The bridge reinforces the song’s directness with blunt honesty about emotional freedom and letting go. Overall, “I’ll Be the Cowboy” stands as a confident, quietly powerful breakup song centered on self-determination rather than loss.
