On May 5th, American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth brought his Whatever’s Clever! World Tour to a packed crowd at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver.
The Grammy-nominated singer, producer, and songwriter is known for polished pop hits like “Attention,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” and his feature on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again.” He is especially recognized for his perfect pitch, catchy melodies, and detailed production style. Over the years, he has evolved from radio-friendly pop into a more personal and musically ambitious artist.
After the success of his 2022 album Charlie, Puth stepped away from the spotlight for a few years. During that hiatus, he became more selective about releasing music and focused on reconnecting with his personal life rather than constantly chasing viral hits and chart success. He spoke openly about burnout from the pressure of social media and the fast pace of the music industry, saying he wanted to create music that felt more meaningful and less calculated.
That break heavily shaped Whatever’s Clever!. Instead of centering the album around polished pop singles, Charlie leaned into a more mature and reflective sound. The project feels calmer and more intentional, touching on themes like self-growth, relationships, and finding balance after years in the public eye.
At 9:00 p.m., Charlie Puth, donning cool shades, took to the stage with his band, opening with the funky “Beat Yourself Up,” a track that previewed the smoother, jazz-inspired direction of his new album.
The stage design felt grand, with Puth and his band performing atop a massive LED platform that shifted visuals throughout the night to match the mood and themes of each song. The production also featured video screens showing dynamic close-up angles of Puth’s hands gliding across the piano, alongside shots of his bandmates performing.
Charlie Puth’s vocals were on point throughout the night and remained the centerpiece of the performance. His backup vocalists were equally impressive, each getting moments to showcase their talent. Despite the strong performances, the arena proved somewhat difficult acoustically, with a noticeable echo occasionally affecting the sound.
During a heartfelt moment in the set, Puth shared that if there was one thing fans should take away from the show, it was inspiration to pursue their own creative passions. Reflecting on his humble beginnings writing songs in his bedroom, he told the crowd that if he could achieve his dreams, anyone could.
The songwriter also made sure to include his biggest hits, including “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” “Attention,” “One Call Away,” and “See You Again.” Hearing these songs performed with a live band and in a more stripped-back, less-produced setting allowed them to be experienced in a completely different light.
Charlie Puth delivered a set that balanced the fresh, jazz-inspired sounds of his new album Whatever’s Clever! with reinvented versions of his biggest hits. The performance highlighted not only his versatility as a performer but also his strength as a songwriter, proving he could likely craft hits in just about any genre he chooses.
