Canadian singer-songwriter Chase Van Dusen has returned with his brand-new single, “Broken” — a raw yet uplifting track that dives deep into themes of pain, self-acceptance, and the long road to healing. Released August 8th, the song marks the first glimpse of his upcoming album, Lost and Found and showcases Van Dusen’s signature blend of heartfelt lyricism and dynamic indie-rock sound.
Produced by JUNO Award-winner Siegfried Meier, mastered by Troy Glessner, and powered by the drumming of Melvin Murray (Texas King), “Broken” balances emotional vulnerability with soaring, anthemic energy. Known for his days fronting Benefit of a Doubt and now carving his path as a solo artist, Van Dusen continues to connect through songs rooted in real experience and unflinching honesty.
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Chase Van Dusen and I’m a Canadian singer-songwriter. I love connecting with people through my songs and sharing my journey with them.
“Broken” is a powerful anthem about healing and resilience. What personal experiences or emotions inspired this track?
To me, “Broken” is a song about looking back and making peace with my journey. It’s a realization that while you can’t change the past, you can change your relationship with it. The song is about understanding that all those moments—even the ones that left me feeling ‘broken’—were essential parts of my story. It’s an honest look at the pieces of my life and an acceptance that they all fit together to create the person I am now.
You worked with JUNO Award-winning producer Siegfried Meier and mastering engineer Troy Glessner. What was it like collaborating with them, and how did they shape the final sound?
I feel truly blessed to have gotten the chance to work with Siegfried Meier again. He has an amazing ability to capture the raw, emotional core of a performance. When we were in the studio, he wasn’t just focused on getting a technically perfect take; he was focused on getting the most authentic one. He has a way of creating a relaxed environment where you feel comfortable being vulnerable, and that really comes through in the recordings. He’s also a master of blending analog warmth with a modern sound, which really helped to elevate the songs sonically.
Troy’s work came in at the final stage, the mastering. He really brought the tracks to life, and I couldn’t be happier with how the final album sounds.
The drumming by Melvin Murray (Texas King) really stands out—how did he get involved in the project?
Collaborating with Melvin was fantastic. We’ve been working together for years now and his drumming on my projects has become crucial. He has this amazing ability to add a layer of energy and emotion to each song he drums on and it always takes the song to a completely new level. It’s not just about the beat; it’s about the feel, and he always delivers. I’m honored to have him on my team and to call him my friend.
Your music spans acoustic, rock, pop, and alternative genres. How do you approach blending those influences into one sound?
I try not to think about genre when I’m writing, I just let the song be what it wants to be. Honestly, I’ve never been someone who sits down and says, ‘I’m going to write a rock song.’ It’s all about the story and the emotions I’m trying to capture for that song.
“Broken” is the first single from your upcoming album Lost and Found. How does this song set the tone for the rest of the record?
I think “Broken” is a perfect introduction to the Lost and Found album because it’s a vulnerable and honest song about finding strength in our flaws. The “lost” parts of the album are about those moments of struggle and failure, while the “found” is the self-acceptance and growth that comes from them. I think “Broken” is the bridge between those two states—it’s the moment of realizing that you can be imperfect without being completely shattered
Can you share a bit about what fans can expect from Lost and Found—both musically and thematically?
Thematically, the album is an unfiltered look at finding yourself in life’s messy moments – a journey from feeling lost to feeling found. Musically, it’s a mix of rock, pop and alternative genres. Although the lyrics are personal to me, I hope listeners can find their own stories within these songs.
Are there any surprises on the album—collaborations, sonic experiments, or songs that might surprise longtime fans?
While the songs on “Lost and Found” are still vulnerable and lyric driven, I think fans will be surprised by the shift in sound. The first half is more rock-focused, then, the second half strips everything down with acoustic versions of some of the songs. In my opinion, this creates a more raw, intimate experience for the listener. In terms of collaborations, I’ve re-released an acoustic version of “Blueprint” that features Jordan Macdonald, the lead singer of Texas King, on vocals.
How has the Ottawa/Gatineau music scene influenced your career and growth as an artist?
The Ottawa / Gatineau music scene has been absolutely crucial to my career and my growth as an artist. What people might not see from the outside is just how incredibly supportive this community is. There’s a true camaraderie here—from event organizers and venues who are always trying to include local acts, to the bands and artists themselves who genuinely support one another.
That kind of environment really pushes you. When you’re surrounded by so many talented people who are all working to be better, it pushes you as a writer/performer to put out the best material possible. It’s more than just a music scene; it’s a creative family that has really helped shape me into the artist I am today.
Beyond the album, what are your goals for the next chapter of your career?
While I’ve been playing a lot of solo acoustic shows, I would love to put together a band. Although my current focus is to get the new album into as many hands as possible, I really want to bring the full-band energy from the recordings to the stage.
However, whether I’m performing acoustically or with a full band, I want to continue playing as many shows as I can, both in and out of the city.
