R&B ARTIST DIVINE LIGHTBODY SHARES HER TAKE ON SITUATIONSHIPS WITH NEW SINGLE “HOMIES”
Toronto R&B artist, songwriter & Multi-instrumentalist Divine Lightbody shares her smooth, sultry new single “Homies” today.“Homies” is a light-hearted take on being in a situationship, Divine’s effortless, sensual vocals and confessional lyrics glide through its heavenly accompanied piano melody. Through authentic storytelling and amazing instrumentation on the production, Divine Lightbody aims to take the genre back to its raw form.
Written by Divine Lightbody and produced by Savvan (Luna Elle, musical direction for YK Osiris), mixed and mastered by adamjosh (Grammy (Spellemanprise) nominated and Juno winning) “Homies” is an intimate collaboration with Divine’s tender vocals caressing the melody, letting her partner know “You, and me Body to body, When you hold me like that, We can never be homies, that’s that”.
“You know all my songs are based on a true story,” Divine Lightbody says. “Homies” is a song about wanting to be more than just friends with that someone you’ve had your eyes on, because low key they make you feel a certain way when you’re with them. It’s about the inner workings of the infamous ‘situationship’. This song is written about those times when a situationship is unavoidable with someone that wants a relationship, and feels that the physical and emotional connection is too strong to stay just friends. This song invites that person to explore what a real relationship would look like between them.”
“Homies” is the beginning of this musical journey for Divine where musical instrumentation and heavenly vocals take center stage with this release and upcoming releases.
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Divine Lightbody. I’m an R&B singer/songwriter with a passion for a plethora of different genres and the essence of true live, soulful music. I take pride in playing and hearing live instruments in my music, as well as telling my personal experience through song.
Tell us a bit about your recent release.
I wrote ‘Homies’ after my friend told me about a situation-ship she was involved in. I realized that I had a similar story and that it seemed to be a pattern amongst so many of us. ‘homies’ is all about that moment when you realize your friendship might be something more. It’s like, you’re super close with this person, but there’s this undeniable romantic vibe that keeps creeping in. With the lyrics, I confess how I can only see myself being more than friends with this person.
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
Writing “Homies” was a natural extension of my love for storytelling through music. I pull inspiration from personal experiences and those around me, which makes it real. Some comfy clothes, my laptop, and a beat or chords on the piano or guitar set the stage for my creative process. With “Homies,” I quickly felt drawn into exploring the line between friendship and something deeper. After starting, I paused midway to reflect, but it didn’t take long to decide I needed to finish this one. The song captures a universal sentiment that I knew people would relate to.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
Fans can anticipate a live performance video shortly after the music is released. I enjoy highlighting the talent of my musician friends through live versions of my songs.
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
Things have all started to come together in the last few years of my career. After resetting and solidifying my team, writing some of my favourite songs I’ve ever written (some released and some unreleased), and getting my first official placement as a songwriter, I feel like I’ve really found my footing, and am excited to continue growing.
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
There are numerous amazing artists creating exceptional music right now. Two of my favourite emerging artists happen to be talented women I’m familiar with. Their music is just fantastic! One is Maria Aragon, whose voice is incredibly smooth. The other is Luna Elle, who possesses a beautifully unique voice and talent.
