Petunia & The Vipers – Five Questions With

Petunia & The Vipers Release Dark but Dancey Single “Bible Preacher”

Louis Armstrong was once asked what his favorite kind of music was, and his response was simple: “good music.” Petunia & the Vipers’ sound may not sit comfortably in one certain genre, but “good music” describes it well.

“Traveling musicians and “Bible Preachers” may have a lot in common,” Petunia & The Vipers suggest. Their dancey new single, “Bible Preachers,” was inspired by death and the afterlife, love, and humanity; overarching themes heard in much of their music.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

Recorded in Vancouver at Rain City Studios produced by me and Steve Loree who has also engineered this one and the last 4. 11 musicians on some tracks. Full horn section (3-6) on over half the album. It’s the biggest production to date for us.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

No process that I can think of? I wait for inspiration and write the song. Over the pandemic, I did write 3 albums worth of new material just by writing. So that’s new!

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release?

Tour tour tour – late August through mid-November/ Canada and the USA. Argentina in 2025 then Europe.

Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

Two more awesome vids are coming with the singles off the album.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

When Steve Loree started encouraging me to promote better (spend 1/3 of the album budget money on promo) and be better organized. Also actually, this new way of “just writing song” has worked great!

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

You all know Sierra Ferrel. She was on my list 5 years ago. CW Stoneking but y’all know him too probably. The Deslondes are amazeballs. Y’all know them coz they were Rolling Stone though. The biggest underground Cdn writer is Al Mader (The Minimalist Jugband) imo. We’ve covered a couple of his songs. But you’ll never see him play unless you catch him with me. I guess he’s also opened for Nick Cave! lol
