ART OF ATTRITION is a blackened technical deathcore band that separates themselves from the underground local scene with their 8-string barrage of dueling melodic guitars, gravity blast beats, intense guttural vocals, and epic orchestration. This year they are releasing their new EP …And It Will All End Forever. To whet the palates of those who enjoy infectious, brutal music, they have released their music video for the single “Vitriol”, which they comment on:

“Vitriol was the first single we wrote and it set the tone for what we wanted to hear in the E.P. musically and lyrically. We created an eerie, despair-like atmosphere within the song while still recalling a fierceness. Creatively, we tried some new song structure ideas and it turned out exactly how we wanted. We are feeling very positive for the next chapter of AOA music.”

Musically, “Vitriol” is technical and epic. It starts with a melodic intro that is reflective of the first verse riff and gives an eerie rising effect. It is fast and technically proficient. It has a very epic chorus, haunting and catchy! Lyrically, it explores themes of anger – if left unchecked, it tends to fester over time. The single is an introspective foray into the worthiness of allowing space for such feelings and actions, into one’s own life.

The EP, …And It Will All End Forever is pure chaotic inoculation. A culmination of everything AoA has worked so hard to achieve in one record. Now, they are set to write a bit out of their comfort zone and delve into other genres that they love. The EP is recommended for fans of Lorna Shore, Aversions Crown, and Gaerea.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

This is Jack Sutherland from Art of Attrition. I am the guitarist, co-founding member, and one of the main songwriters of the band, and provide the guitar/bass tracking and orchestral compositions.

I am originally from Scotland, my family immigrated to Canada when I was very young, so I have no accent and am more Canadian than not.

I am a big hockey fan, LET’S GO OILERS!

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

This release, “…And It Will All End Forever”, has been very exciting to put together. We spent more time polishing this product and we are all very proud of what we accomplished. We added more aggression, more epic orchestration, and more atmospheric elements to the songs. There are many musical motifs throughout the EP that can be found in different songs as well as a main motif that is showcased in the lyrics. The EP cover was done by Mark Erskine of Erskine Designs, the music was mixed & mastered by Nico Beninato of Kimera Recordings, and the drums were captured by Deigo Fernandez of Oracle Studios.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

My creative routine, when it comes to writing guitar parts, starts with a previous idea that then evolves from there. Most of the time, the actual riff idea doesn’t turn out how it was first imagined but comes out better and more organic. I tend to let inspiration hit me more naturally than forcing a song. When the juices are flowing though, an entire song seems to come together.

We as a band work through riffs and songs that were written prior to rehearsals as well as starting from scratch in the space and coming up with something completely new in the moment.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

There have been many highlights thus far, but to name a particular one I would say when we embarked on our first full tour in 2023. We traveled across Canada and the experiences were amazing. It really opened a lot of doors for us. We capped off that successful tour by playing Loud As Hell Fest in Drumheller AB a week after the tour was done. The slot time we got was prime and wow did people ever show up that night. It was raining in the desert while we played but no one cared.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

Check out Beguiler from Toronto. We played 3 shows with them in Ontario last summer and they are solid, hard-working dudes. They also just won the Wacken Canada Metal Battle and will be playing at Wacken Germany this summer! Congrats to them – very well earned. They have new music out now, give it a listen!
