Super Plage – Five Questions With

Super Plage Released New Single, “Rue Dandurand (Feat. Le Couleur)” and Announces Summer Tour Dates

After a successful year on stage and having garnered over a million streams online, the talented Montreal-based producer Super Plage has released an alternate version of his flagship track “Rue Dandurand (Feat. Le Couleur).”. This single, whose official music video was directed by Virginie B.., is off the album Magie à minuit released just over a year ago.

With this fourth album Magie à minuit (Lisbon Lux Records) released on March 31, 2023, the artist once again manages to imbue the sparkle of nightlife into a subtle and poignant house-pop opus. This album is a breath of fresh air, entirely dedicated to dancing into the wee hours of the morning.

Super Plage will be performing in Montreal at the Fairmount Theatre on May 23 before embarking on a summer tour throughout the province.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a multi-instrumentalist/producer (and dog dad) out of Montréal (originally from Rimouski) who played in punk/rock/ska/pop bands before I went down the rabbit hole of machines and music production in my early 20s. Super Plage is my first francophone project and also my first collective one. I like to make catchy and simple music that is also surprising and exciting. Although I’m the main frontman/composer/singer, we always present the show as a trio live, sometimes with guests, and a lot of people are involved in the composition and production of the album. I’m also a DJ and producer/beatmaker/mixer for other artists.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

This is the second collaboration between Le Couleur and myself. They’re one of my favorite bands and I actually had no idea that we were almost neighbours when I first heard their music, I thought they were from France! Without going into incriminating details, this song is actually without any fantasy, it’s about the crazy parties that happen at their studio, on Dandurand Street (Rue Dandurand). Sometimes I try to think of the perfect collaborators for a song with an aesthetic mindset (which voice would be the best for it etc.) but this one just could not have featured anyone else. The first line refers to the night my guitarist and his girlfriend broke up during a party (Hi Shaun!) and the rest is just a pretty accurate picture of everything else. I remember starting with the hard kick, planning to make a club song, but then I added the chords and melody and it turned out to be very different than what I intended. It features pedal-steel guitar played by Patrick Gosselin and some glimpses of conversation between me and Laurence G-Do.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

I really try to experiment with different processes, it struck me that if want to be constantly producing and improving I had to think outside the box and try to make inspiration happen rather than wait for it. But generally, I never have a single word written before the music is pretty well advanced and then I try to see what I could sing on it! Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of jams with my friends, we try to record 7-8 rough beats a night and then we each pick a few to work on later. I also show demos to my bandmates and close friends and if no one seems too excited about a track, I generally don’t keep on working on it.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

This release is actually one of the last ones on the Magie à Minuit album cycle, it comes with an amazing music video directed by Virginie Bédard (solo artist and bandmate of mine). The next tour will mostly showcase the next album to come out (secret secret) but it is safe to say that one may see Le Couleur and I perform it live together on a few occasions 😉

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

There are many, but most of them were not of my doing though. Meeting my first manager was really the moment that validated me and introduced me to what the industry really is, as well as giving me a structure and actual plan while I’d always done everything DIY, with the results that came with it. The same is true of the moment when I signed my first label deal with Lisbon Lux Records, a label that I have been following for almost a decade. Lastly, winning my first GAMIQ prize showed me that I had a place in the scene, while I’d always felt that it was hard to belong in this industry I’d been watching from a distance without thinking that I could really be a part of.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

VIRGINIE B! She’s been in the band for like 4 years and I saw her grow as an artist to become the star that she is today, her music is amazing and she is one of the best performers I know!

Also : Béli, La Monarque, Issa Karim, Nectar Palace, Robert Robert, Lydia Képinski,
