One Hundred Moons – Five Questions With

One Hundred Moons Release Captivating Music Video for “Viva Forever” Cover

Toronto’s own dream pop and shoegaze ensemble, One Hundred Moons, is thrilled to announce the release of their visually striking music video for the cover of the Spice Girls’ iconic hit, “Viva Forever.” Released yesterday, the video was entirely self-produced in the band’s jam space and directed and edited by guitarist/ producer Collin Young, highlighting their multifaceted talents and DIY ethos.

Following their mesmerizing cover of Soundgarden’s “4th of July,” One Hundred Moons continues to explore and reinterpret ’90s classics through their unique sonic lens. Their version of “Viva Forever” has already captivated audiences with its dreamlike soundscape and ethereal melodies. Now, the accompanying music video promises to enchant viewers with its compelling imagery and storytelling, enhancing the auditory experience with a visual journey through nostalgia and memory.

Collin Young, the video’s director and the band’s guitarist and producer, shared his thoughts on the project:

We shot and edited the video ourselves. I think being in total control of every step of the process has helped ensure the end result is what we envisioned. It’s amazing how with today’s technology, what would have taken a bigger budget just a short time ago, can be produced for next to, or literally nothing.

Shot in various setups around their jam space, the video blends intimate performance footage with surreal visual effects, creating a narrative that is both poignant and evocative. The video invites viewers to immerse themselves in a world where time stands still, and music bridges the gap between past and present.

The release of the “Viva Forever” music video marks an exciting moment for One Hundred Moons, showcasing their artistic growth and commitment to creating immersive experiences for their audience. Fans can watch the video on the band’s official YouTube channel and stream the track across all major platforms.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Jen and I’m the singer and one of the synth players in One Hundred Moons. I’ve loved singing since I was a kid and took many years of piano lessons but I’m fairly new to live music. I’ve dabbled in songwriting and making my own recordings for a long time but this is the most seriously I’ve ever taken my involvement in music. It’s a dream come true! I have been to more concerts than I can count and have previously worked in the musical instrument business. I currently work in film production for my day job and have worked in the entertainment industry for over 15 years.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

Most recently One Hundred Moons put out a two-song EP of covers called Take Two. We thought it would be fun to do a few beloved songs we enjoyed as teenagers. I think it’s a great way to show people what we sound like through something familiar and nostalgic. I really love playing covers and I think it’s extra fun when bands play with the original arrangements and try to create something different, and I think we’ve accomplished that with this latest release. We thought it would be fun to take a sludgy grunge tune (Soundgarden – 4th of July) and juxtapose it with some sweet, fluffy pop music (Spice Girls – Viva Forever). There’s really a common ground in all music when you break down the bare bones and it’s really cool to inject your own style into something that someone else created.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

Typically, Collin (guitar) does the bulk of the songwriting. He builds the skeleton and shows it to us for review. Then I will come up with vocal melodies which Collin will critique and mold to the song and we collaborate on vocal ideas until we are happy with them. He usually also writes the bulk of the lyrics but I usually collaborate with him on that and we critique each other until we come up with something we love. This is always followed by NJ (drums, synth, guitar) and Justin (bass, samples) hearing the recordings of the basic track ideas and collaborating on ways for improvement of the drum arrangements and the arrangements in general. Other riffs and song ideas are also pitched by NJ and Justin at this stage. Collin is also the producer of all of our music and he records and masters everything but we all collaborate on the final production as well.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

We just came back from a mini tour of Ottawa, Trois Rivieres, and Montreal. We just dropped the video for 4th of July and Viva Forever later in April and we’ve been doing a lot of interviews as of late. We will be playing a lot more shows in Toronto and surrounding areas in Ontario throughout the summer and right now we’re working on a new record which we hope will be released next year which we are really excited about. There will likely be another tour arranged once we put out that record.

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

As I mentioned earlier, while the rest of the guys are seasoned musicians who have been doing this for ages, I am relatively new to live music so it was quite an accomplishment for me to play the Apriliis Festival in Montreal at the famous La Sala Rossa. I had a bit of stage fright but when I stood on that stage and sang, I felt like I was meant to be there. It was truly exciting.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

Lately, everyone in the band has been pretty excited about a post-metal band from Chicago called Rezn. The guys saw them open for Russian Circles and were pretty impressed by them. I have been really into Absolutely Free for the last couple of years. They are doing some really interesting and unique things with synths.
