Devin Cooper Unveils New Single, “She’s My Religion”
Breakout country-rocker Devin Cooper is wearing his heart on his sleeve with his first release of the year, “She’s My Religion.” A hopeless romantic at the core, Cooper’s new track is inspired by his own love for his partner and the strength of the relationships he has been lucky to grow up surrounded by. Today’s release is sure to be at the top of everyone’s playlist this Valentine’s Day.
Written by Cooper and Chris Yurchuck (ANNIKA, Brett Kissel, and The Prairie States), the song came easily to the pair as they caught up on life while together in a home studio in Nashville. Showcasing Cooper’s 10+ years of songwriting experience, the new track delivers lyrics of admiration and faithfulness that will resonate with listeners who have ever had a profound love.
“I wrote this song thinking about the state of the world right now, and how it can be hard to find something to believe in,” said Cooper on the inspiration behind the song. “I was reflecting on what keeps me grounded and no one does that more than my partner. She’s what I believe in, and I know she believes in me. And so came this love song thanking a partner for keeping you going no matter what is happening.”
With the heartfelt release out today Cooper has perfected his southern-rock sound, seamlessly blending his traditional country storytelling with southern rock guitar licks. “She’s My Religion” is poised to become the love song of the season and will be on Cooper’s album coming later this year. Cooper has finely tuned his craft over the years and is excited for fans to see his artistic growth in this thoughtfully curated collection of new songs.
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey Canadian Beats! I am Devin Cooper – a Canadian Country Rock artist and songwriter based out of Calgary, AB.
Tell us a bit about your recent release.
This new track “She’s My Religion” is a really special one for me. I wrote this one with my longtime friend and collaborator Chris Yurchuck, down in Nashville in May of 2023. Looking at everything that’s happening around you, sometimes it’s hard to find anything to believe in, and as an artist, I feel like it’s especially difficult to believe in yourself some days. I am incredibly fortunate to always have my partner always by my side, and I know that she’s who I believe in no matter what – and I know she believes in me. I wrote this for anyone who has that special someone in their life, that is their grounding force, and the thing that keeps them going.
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
It’s always a little bit different. I usually come up with a lyrical idea or guitar riff at some point every day, and I keep track of them on my phone. When I am headed in to write with someone like Chris, I now understand how to support my vision as an artist, so I’ll usually save ideas that I want to record myself for those writes. We typically hang out for a while, catch up, shoot the shit, and then start tossing a few ideas around the room. We see what everyone is feeling, and if there are any ideas that really resonate with everyone in the room. If there is – we chase that idea. I’ll start throwing around some guitar licks, we’ll lock down a feeling/vibe for where we want the story to go, and then we get after it!
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
Back in December, I was able to put together a really cool event, where we recorded half of my upcoming record live off the floor, with 40 of my biggest fans and supporters in the room with us. We filmed and recorded the entire night. With that, we were able to create all of the live acoustic videos for the record, and we will be releasing that as well. And… as I said… for the other half of my record. So, we do have a record coming out later in 2024, and I am so stoked to show you what we’ve been working on! This year also marks the 5th annual Ride To Remember Charity event that I put on in support of the Alzheimer Society of Calgary. We are in the final stages of planning that event, and are going to be announcing it shortly as well!
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
There are definitely a few turning points and a few highlights. I’ll pick one of each for you. Back in September of 2018, one of the major turning points happened. I quit my job back in my hometown after finishing college and moved to Calgary to pursue playing and writing music full-time. This was a massive leap that I had been working towards for a couple of years. It was scary as hell at the time, but it was 10000% worth it.
One of the highlights was being in Sirius XM’s Top of The Country, back in 2022. We were recording my single “Underdog” at The Warehouse in Vancouver, and the owner, Bryan Adams (you might have heard of him before? Haha) happened to be there. Growing up, I was a massive Bryan Adams fan – and still am! Bryan came downstairs after we finished our recording session, and introduced himself. He was one of the most down-to-earth, kind people, I have ever met in my life. He spent about 45 minutes with the band and I, showing us around the studio. After that, he took about 20 minutes with me on his own and sat down to chat about my career, and his career, and gave me some words of wisdom based on his life experiences on the road and in the studio. I had the chance to tell him that my parent’s wedding song was (Everything I Do) I Do It For You”.
Oh, he also handed me a 1955 Martin D-18 to play for a minute and then proceeded to tell me it was Johnny Cash’s old guitar. What?! Absolutely insane. One of the coolest moments of my life.
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
One of my favourite newer artists is a buddy of mine named Brayden King. Big fan of what he’s doing. We met back in 2021 at the Country Music Alberta Awards, and just instantly hit it off. We started hanging out and writing a few tunes together. He’s out there working his ass off, playing shows across the country non-stop, and writing and recording some super cool material. Really stoked to see what the future brings for him.
