Hot Garbage – Five Questions With

Hot Garbage to offer a second single from their forthcoming album: Precious Dream

“Mystery”, the second single from Hot Garbage’s new album, Precious Dream (January 19th, 2024 via Mothland & Exag’ Records), delivers the curious story of Judy and Billy amidst a fuzzed-out riff with a twisted surf twang.

After successfully summoning Davie Allan’s long-lost Mosrite, the Toronto psych-rockers elect to delve deep into chromaesthesia, painting a stylish musical fresco about voluntary amnesia and blissful confusion.

The track builds and builds, reaching an intense, swirling climax – a familiar feeling for those acquainted with the band’s previous work –  before dropping the listener back into the song’s hypnotizing guitar hook, effectively leaving them to wonder: “What was this all about?”

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, we’re Hot Garbage, a band from Toronto.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

Precious Dream is our second full-length produced by Graham Walsh, who is great to work with. It’s an amalgamation of songs written during the pandemic that explore themes like loss, resilience, and isolation. There’s a balance of dark and light but overall it leans to the darker side of emotions. As far as the writing process, it came about in a much less collaborative way than we normally write because of lockdown restrictions, so the distinctive voices of the different songwriters in the band are a bit more pronounced. We came together to complete the songs and record them mainly live off the floor, so it’s not such a departure from the last album and still sounds like us. We’re really happy with how it sounds and excited to put it out.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

We are doing a short run in early December to Sarnia, Guelph, London, and Hamilton. Over the winter we’re heading out west to Big Winter Classic and Winterruption in Calgary and Edmonton, and we’ve got release shows in Toronto and Montreal that are TBA. Come spring we’ll be headed back to Austin for SX and playing a few US shows around that, and then heading back to Europe / UK.

If given the chance, which Canadian artist would you love to work with in the future?

There are a lot of really great artists and pals in Toronto and Montreal, maybe a collaboration could come up for the next record. There isn’t anyone particular in mind at the moment.

What’s your goal for 2024?

Mainly touring this record and getting it out there, and working on the next record in between that.
