Featuring Tyler Shaw, LØLØ, New Friends, Noelle, and Shawn Hook
This holiday season, Derik Baker, the multi-platinum, JUNO Award-nominated artist known as Virginia to Vegas, has brought together a group of beloved Canadian artists, including Tyler Shaw, LØLØ, New Friends, noelle, and Shawn Hook, for a heartwarming collaboration in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Together, they have breathed new life into the timeless holiday classic, “Last Christmas,” with a synth-pop reimagining, available for download and streaming across platforms. 100% of the proceeds generated from all streams and downloads will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
“I started working on ‘Last Christmas’ in July – the Wham track has always been one of my absolute favourite holiday songs,” Baker shares. “Around the same time, my close friend Shawn Hook announced his remission from cancer. Having lost my dad to cancer, I was inspired by witnessing someone I had worked so closely with, roughly the same age and same occupation, go through something so challenging, and with so much grace. I decided to assemble a great crew of friends to produce a modern rendition of the classic song, and use our combined talents to raise funds for this devastating disease. Collaborating with everyone was a lot of fun, and as a producer, it was such a pleasure to make each singer’s unique style shine in a single song.”
“Last Christmas” starts with a soft, spacey introduction, before transcending into a wistful symphony of pop perfection, driven by a punchy bass line, dynamic vocal performances, and seamless harmonies between the collaborating artists
To maximize the spirit of giving this season, Virginia to Vegas will host a fundraising gala at the University Club of Toronto on December 8. This enchanting evening will feature live performances and a silent auction, generously stocked with items from Harry Rosen, Formula Fig, Scotiabank, MLSE, Kiin Toronto, Long and McQuade, and many more. All proceeds from this gala will be dedicated to the Canadian Cancer Society. Gala tickets can be purchased now via Eventbrite, or fans looking to contribute directly to fundraising efforts can do so here.
Virginia to Vegas will continue to spread the holiday cheer later this month when he joins the CP Holiday Train for a second year in a row, kicking off the train’s eastern run through the US and Canada.
