Sherry Jacoby Tells a Cautionary Love Tale in “For the Rest of Time”
Toronto-based pop/folk indie artist Sherry Jacoby’s new single, “For the Rest of Time”, explores the inner world of being stuck in time and place. The song was inspired by Miss Havisham, a character from the book Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. After getting left at the altar, Miss Havisham locked herself in her house and insisted on wearing her wedding dress for the rest of her life.
Sherry wrote “For the Rest of Time” shortly after graduating from university and experiencing a breakup.
“I read Great Expectations in one of my English classes and the character Miss Havisham immediately resonated with me,” reflects Sherry. “I saw this character’s story as a cautionary tale of what I could become if I never moved through my heartbreak – bitter, numb, and stuck in the past. Writing this song was therapeutic for me since it allowed me to fully experience my pain.”
“It was from that rock bottom that I was able to release my emotions and heal from my heartbreak,” explains Sherry. While crafting the song, Sherry hoped to balance the darker theme of the lyrics with a lighter sonic mood. With her harmony-soaked arrangements and dreamy vocal sound, she combines the influences of Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, and Colbie Caillat.
In 2022, Sherry was approached by Nashville producer Shannon McArthur via social media after he found her cover of “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves. Shannon has produced acts including Dashboard Confessional and Adam Durtiz (Counting Crows) and his songs have been featured on shows including ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy”. As Sherry and Shannon began working together, he was excited to move forward with producing “For the Rest of Time”. Shannon also introduced Sherry to Denver-based drummer Nate Barnes, who recorded drums on the song. Nate is a founding member of the Rock band Rose Hill Drive with whom he opened for legendary bands such as The Who, Van Halen, and Aerosmith.
The recording of the song took place as a virtual collaboration with Shannon in Nashville, Nate in Denver, and Sherry in Toronto.
“It was my first time collaborating virtually on a recording and I am so happy with how it turned out,” reflects Sherry. “I think that the creative energy and magic that comes from musical collaboration is reflected in this song.”
Sherry is excited to share “For the Rest of Time” with the world and dive into more performances in the Toronto area. Her next year is looking bright as she continues to collaborate with Shannon on recording more of her original songs. Follow her on Instagram to stay up to date on her upcoming releases.
