Ottawa’s Violentene Shares New Single, “Thin Lines”

Violentene has unveiled the new single, “Thin Lines” from their upcoming EP, Human Drama, set for release in October 2023.

Centered around a theme of dizzying mental states and the razor-thin line between reality and slowly slipping off the edge, all set to a bittersweet/melancholic soundtrack.

The accompanying music video features actor/model Kari Duguay captured in some of the most iconic landscapes in the Ottawa (Canada) area, attempting to escape a dark force that seems to follow her through the journey to find freedom from it…

“Thin Lines” had its genesis in 2022 as a synth patch. Inspiration came quickly in moments of clarity, the song then passed onto Mvrijo, and ruminated over until a solid structure appeared – definitely not overthought, to keep the initial vibe and emotion intact and pure.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

M+R: We’re Violentene, a synth duo from Ottawa: Roland M on synths, guitar, and producer duties and Mvrijo, vocals, and lyrics.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

Roland: We’re always extremely happy to get new music out there, as it’s a long labor of love on our end from start to finish. The new single / video is “Thin Lines” – Mvrijo can elaborate on the theme/ vibe:

Mvrijo: Thin Lines represents the relationship you have with yourself. The lyrics ‘I’m walking on a Thin Line’ is that ambivalent line between sanity and insanity, love and hate which often can involve self-acceptance and self-care. When you’re close to losing yourself and breaking down yet you remain afloat and in control. We often find ourselves navigating between anger, sadness, jealousy, etc. Like Aristotle once said: ´There is no great genius without a touch of madness.”

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Roland: For me, it tends to come from thin air when least expected- I’ll plug into the studio and start creating synth sounds and just begin playing. Often a melody that’s interesting will surface, and then I commit it to the DAW immediately to save the inspiration. The vibe of the music will elicit a theme, word, or phrase which I pass on to Mvrijo.

Mvrijo: I find inspiration in long car rides, nature, or simply by listening to others. Also, by putting everything into a new perspective and not overlooking the ordinary. Songwriting allows you to express things that you can’t otherwise say, so let yourself be curious and just write whenever creativity strikes, even if it’s at odd times!

Roland: Agreed! It’s in the least expected moments that something really cool emerges.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

We don’t have upcoming shows at the moment but make sure to check out our new website violentene.com for updates and for more information.

What’s your goal for 2023?

Roland: The release of the Thin Lines single/ video, (both of which took some serious planning and work with an amazing crew) and ultimately the release of our new EP “ Human Drama” in October – all big milestones for us! Just getting these out in front of people is wonderful, and we’re also pursuing some sync opportunities to get these into film- TV. We always write and record this music for our own expression, but for it to connect on a wider scale is the primary goal!
