Somebody's Curse

Somebody’s Curses haunts the airwaves with “Bedhead”

Fresh to Toronto, the enigmatic and cave-dwelling troglodyte, Somebody’s Curses, crawls out of a centipede-ridden basement to debut his first single from an upcoming self-titled album.

Set in the headspace of the perpetually tired, “Bedhead” is an inky piano ballad with creeping instrumentals that eventually climbs to a hectic and bittersweet summit. Partially recorded at the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology and Noble Street Studios, the single uses multiple recording environments to create a juxtaposition of intimate vocals and wide-open sounding piano and guitar.

With guidance and advice from veteran engineer Dean Nelson (Beck, Jamie Lidell) and production from EDM artist Jasper Terpstra, the single taps into a 90’s era of biting melodies and dynamic structure while maintaining a modern and complex sound.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hello Readers, my name is Somebody’s Curses. I’m a Toronto-based indie-alternative songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in a centipede-ridden basement near Lake Ontario, I’m told I’m fairly tolerable if you get to know me and my diet mostly consists of Tibetan momos and Coke Zero.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

My new release “Bedhead” is the first single from my upcoming self-titled album. It was originally written on a decrepit, out-of-tune, cabinet piano I inherited in 2019. It was later properly recorded at the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology in London ON in 2021 with production and engineering done by a close friend and classmate. “Bedhead” is my moody love letter for the underslept, mentally unwell, and post-stimulant-fueled demographic of Canada.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Inspiration comes from many places. For example, my inspiration to move into a nicer place with a window is a great motivator. In truth, I am heavily inspired by alternative ‘90s powerhouses which include Fiona Apple, Elliott Smith, Radiohead, and Nirvana. I also spend a lot of time free-time feverishly trying to find new music through streaming or live performances. Nothing gets your motivation going like being humbled by all the good music out there.

If you could work with any Canadian band or artist who would you choose?

The first one that came to mind was Louis-Jean Cormier, an indie rock artist from Quebec. Maybe less known than he should be in the English-speaking areas of Canada, he’s really fantastic and I urge anyone to listen to his 2020 album Quand la nuit tombe, it’s gorgeous. Louis-Jean, if you’re reading this, I’ll buy a T-shirt once I can afford it.

What’s your goal for 2023?

Well, I’m releasing a second single in September and then a full-length album in October of this year which is entirely self-funded from leftover change I’ve been fishing out of sewer grates. It’s taken about a full year and a half of recording and mixing and my producer and I are very excited to finally share it. The dream is for it to be a catalyst for some government funding for the next one so we can hit the ground running after it drops. Thanks for checking it out!
