Genre: Country
Canadian country artist Justine Blanchet has released her five-song EP, Don’t Ask Me To Dance.
Produced in Nashville by Grammy-nominated Danick Dupelle (Tebey, Tyler Joe Miller, Matt Lang), Don’t Ask Me to Dance is a modern country musical exploration of the realities of modern dating across 5 tracks – with each song representing a unique aspect and experience. To bring Blanchet’s intended artistic message to life, the EP features the talents of 14 formidable songwriters, including MacKenzie Porter, Madeline Merlo, Laci Kaye Booth, Emma-Lee, Lindsay Rimes, Kelly Archer, Jason Nix, and Derrick Southerland.
In speaking about the EP, Blanchet says,
“As an independent artist, it is a thrill for my debut EP to be a reality now. Ever since we started planning this project back in in 2021, my goal has been to challenge myself as an artist and create something relatable for others. Dating is full of adventures – both good and bad – but always memorable, so it felt like the right theme to build the EP around. I think people who listen to these songs will find a little bit of themselves in each one and realize how many shared experiences we go through in this thing called life.”
The EP features the two previously released singles, “Hard to Love” and “Heart Less.”
The title track, “Don’t Ask Me To Dance,” stands out at the midway point and immediately grabbed my interest. The lyrics present a strong and confident individual who knows their boundaries. The chorus, “Boy if you see me out, Don’t ask me to dance, Don’t bother comin’ round, You done blew your chance,” delivers a firm message, clearly showcasing the protagonist’s resolve to avoid dancing or pursuing any romantic relationship with that individual. The relatable lyrics and country-style melody make it a captivating and unforgettable experience for listeners.
The EP closes with “Heart Less,” the most recent single from the EP. The poignant lyrics explore the conflict between reason and emotional vulnerability within a romantic relationship. The chorus serves as a powerful statement of regret, emphasizing the need to listen to the logical mind rather than succumbing to the deceptive allure of the heart. The repeated line, “I should have listened to my head more and heart less,” reinforces this message and vividly portrays the protagonist’s internal conflict.
Overall, Don’t Ask Me To Dance is a remarkable collection of five upbeat country songs that seamlessly blend elements of traditional and modern country music. Each song showcases the best of both worlds, with infectious melodies, relatable lyrics, and expertly crafted arrangements. Don’t Ask Me To Dance showcases the versatility of country music, providing a vibrant and enjoyable listening experience for fans of all ages.
