Sky of Fire – Sky of Fire (Album Review)

Sky of Fire

Artist: Sky of Fire
Album: Sky of Fire
Release Date: May 9, 2023
Genre: Indie Rock

Sky of Fire is the brainchild of Toronto-based songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist, Phil
Davies. The newly released nine-song self-titled album was released on May 9, 2023, and features a number of session singers based primarily out of Nashville, Los Angeles, and the GTA.

The album begins with the previous single, “Yourself,” which possesses an anthemic quality. The chorus, “If you lose yourself, you lose your meaning, don’t wait too long, don’t lose this feeling,” delivers a powerful message, encouraging listeners to stay true to themselves and not give up on their dreams or beliefs. The simplicity of the lyrics also adds to their impact, making the message easy to understand and relate to.

“Disappearing” consists of a more uptempo beat, with the vocals matching suit. The lyrics, “and I see myself floating away, just to disappear for another day,” are powerful expressions of the desire to escape from reality. This, as with the previous track, consist of entirely relatable lyrics.

“Don’t Forget Today” continues the theme of highly engaging themes. Showcasing the slower side of the release, this time featuring a piano, which complements the vocals perfectly on the track. Throughout the song, the emotive vocals evoke a sense of determination and longing, urging the listener never to give up.

Overall, the self-titled release features a number of highly-inspirational songs that listeners will relate to, and serve as a motivational push. The release covers various themes, including loss, love, and the struggles we all face.

Phil shares,

“It is a tale of using music to get through challenging times, while ultimately serving as a love letter to my wife as she battled a long-term illness. These songs also served as closure in coming to terms with my dad’s untimely death in 2012.

These themes may sound heavy, but the music generally pushes the tempo and aims to inspire, while reminding loved ones that our lives are a blank canvas for us to paint.”
