Amelie Patterson – “The War” (Single Review)

Western Canada alt-pop auteur Amelie Patterson shares “The War”

Calgary, Alberta-based alt-pop artist Amelie Patterson has unveiled her latest single, “The War.”

“The War” is an anthem “for those who need it.” It’s a song about recognizing the invisible struggles that others are going through and finding your own place as you lend support for a battle you can’t fight.

“The War” was recorded in Calgary with producer Will Maclellan (Phoebe Bridgers, Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift) with long-time collaborators Barry Mason, Carson Gant, and Kyle Tenove. A deeply intimate and vulnerable vocal take is cradled by guitar tone nostalgic of vinyl recordings and held aloft by organic instruments and a dynamic rhythm.

Review

“The War” is an ethereal and introspective alt-pop balladesque track that showcases Amelie’s stunning vocals as they convey the raw emotion of the lyrics with grace and nuance.

This track showcases Amelie’s incredible range and versatility as a vocalist, with delicate verses, powerful choruses, and spoken word sections woven into a breathtakingly beautiful arrangement.

The opening lyrics, “I know you’re sad and sick and sorry, You wear it like a skin, You made a shell and put it forward, To prevent us breaking in, It’s closing like a vice, All that love and sacrifice, Time to pay the price,” along with the chorus, a simple repetitive.”And fight the war,” evokes a call for action.
