Joe H Henry – “Time” (Single Review) + Five Questions With

Joe H Henry releases his brand new single, “Time”

With a voice as powerful as a wayward freight train, singer-songwriter Joe H Henry bellows the flames of gritty Americana roots with a whole lot of soul.

The son of award-winning Canadian country musician Harvey Henry, Joe was born to sing, gifted with a one-of-a-kind voice and a love for storytelling through song.

Drawing from his musical roots and heritage of the Red River Valley, Joe’s younger years were spent traveling from town to town with nothing but a faithful dog and a guitar, collecting life lessons and harnessing the flame of inspiration that was often masked in struggle.

Eventually settling down on a homestead in the wilds of North Mountain, Nova Scotia, with his wife and five children in 2020, Joe is now ready to wholeheartedly share his talent with the world and will release his debut EP, Wilder on the Mountain, in Summer 2023.

Review

On Joe H Henry’s latest single, “Time,” he wastes no time before belting out his gritty yet polished vocals.

With low and sparse instrumentation, consisting primarily of a bluesy guitar riff and a simple drumbeat, the vocals stand front and centre from beginning to end. He adds some vocal flourishes throughout the track, like the way he stretches out the word “time” in the chorus or the way he adds a little growl to the end of certain phrases.

From the first lyrics, “When the sun is shining, You and me, Close your eyes, And let it be, See the life we’ve been given, It ain’t no mistake, So let’s start living,” to the expertly drawn-out ending, “You and me,” the song is completely relatable, making it a track I’d definitely recommend.

In summary, “Time” highlights Joe’s standout vocal talent and emotional depth while demonstrating the power of minimal instrumentation and production.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

This is the second single off my debut EP, called “Time.” I wrote this song to shine a light on what becomes possible when we, as human beings, live for each other and live each moment, understanding that there will never be another one like it. If we slow down and appreciate each other and the moments we are given, the magic of living can truly take place over and above any anxiety about what might be or the depressive nature of what might have been.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

My inspiration is constantly evolving, but I have always tapped into the human condition and the living stories that are taking place everywhere around us. The experiences of our lives and how they intertwine within this world.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

So many! All of my upcoming shows can be found on my website at www.joehhenry.com/events

Some highlights: My first ECMA showcase is at the Halifax Shopping Centre on April 29th from 2-3 pm, then later that evening, I’m honored to be a part of the 8th annual Shine Blue Fundraiser for Autism at the Bras D’or Inn in St.Peter’s.

I’ll be featured on Radio ECMA on May 6th at 5:40 pm, then playing at the Brown Hound Public House from 6:20-7 pm for my ECMA-sponsored “unofficial” showcase this year.

Lastly, my EP release show is set for June 17th at the Carleton. Tickets are available now at www.theCarleton.ca

What’s your goal for 2023?

I have some collaboration projects in the works and am already planning for a full-length album in 2024. Branching out to NB and PEI for my EP release tour this Summer, my goal is to reach as many lives as possible with my music. A showcase at NSMW 2023 and an award nomination or two would be amazing! I believe in dreaming big and living with no limitations.
