A gem of the Toronto Soul and R&B scene, Claire Davis‘s Get It Right consists of some of her most personal writing to date. Drawing from the reflective nature of the pandemic, her compositions and lyrics examine themes of self-worth, relationships, and even family dynamics.:

The concept behind the album is about knowing your worth and putting the work in. I think this is a poignant message for many people as we emerge from a tumultuous time. We have had the opportunity to assess what we actually want to return to, what’s truly for our benefit and for the greater good. Much of the lyrical content in the album is inspired by my own personal journey of struggling to break toxic cycles within my family and learning to forge my own path.”

The ten-song release features previous singles, “Times Have Changed,” “Long Gone,” and “Intuition.” These three tracks serve as a wonderful introduction to Claire’s soulful sound and vocal range.

The title track, “Get It Right,” begins with a steady beat, joined by Claire’s powerful yet tender vocals, which draw the listener in. The chorus is both fun and emotive with the lyrics, “You light up the room when you walk in it, The fact that I’m with you tells me I’m winning, If loving you is wrong baby I’m sinning.”

Claire shares,

“The lyrics were inspired by my relationship with my partner and the intention that we both have to work on healing ourselves in order to make our partnership work. I’d like to think that it’s a love song with a strong sense of maturity and understanding to it. And the whole record was really shaped around that idea of my relationships and experiences stemming from my own sense of self-love and my desire to live and create from an authentic place.”

“Good For You” features a slow, soulful groove, intertwining with Claire’s smooth, expressive vocals. The lyrics throughout the track have an introspective quality, which encourages women to respect themselves and demand more from their partners.

Closing the album, “Colours” is not only the most serious track on the release but also conveys strength and resilience. The lyrics, “But I see your true colours baby, I see em shinin’ through, And I won’t wait around, Just for you to make me blue,” inspire a sense of disappointment and disillusionment but also convey a message of self-respect and empowerment, as she refuses to settle for less than she deserves.

Overall, the album’s fusion of soul, R&B, and soul elements, combined with Claire’s powerful vocals and thoughtful lyrics, will surely captivate listeners from beginning to end.
