Zach’s Picks of the Week – April 10 to April 15, 2023

Zach Cooper shares his five top articles from Canadian Beats

How does one begin to list some of the best new Canadian music on the market? Simple, it’s called Zach’s Picks Of The Week, and they are here to bring you your new favourite songs of the week. I have compiled my top five favourites from all the awesome articles and content posted here on our website. However, there is so much more that you should go and explore. So stay up-to-date on everything new on Canadian Beats. But you were here on this music Monday to see some of what we have to offer. So let’s get things started with this week’s video just below us. It will feature a clip from each artist and their song. Then you can explore the articles linked in this post, but also the description of the video. Do you understand how it works? Let’s get into the music here on a beautiful music Monday!

Five

Let’s get things started with a Nova Scotian alt-rocker by the name of Elyse Aeryn. Her long-awaited debut album, Joy State of Mind, is out now and can be streamed everywhere. This 8-song record was co-produced by Aeryn and engineer Jamie Foulds at Soundpark Studios. The overall result is a perfect introduction for this up-and-coming East Coast artist. She definitely has a long career ahead of her, so stay up to date. Read our full review of her debut album, Joy State of Mind, and listen to all the songs here

Four

Moving on down the list of new music brings us to the Winnipeg rock band, New Wales. They have recently released their new single, “Not Reading Minds,” coming from their upcoming album Big Same – out April 14th and it’s a fusion of rock and pop that draws heavily from the Canadian bands of the 90s—recorded at Argyle Studios with the band’s long-time collaborator and bandmate, Rusty Matyas, who served as co-producer. Most of the tracks were recorded live off the floor, adding a raw and personal feel to the record. You can see the new “Not Reading Minds” video in our post, where we also had a Five Questions With segment with New Wales here

Three

Now let’s introduce you to the best-looking band, whose name just so happens to be Pretty. They are from around Toronto and have unveiled their latest single, “Wait For The Sun.” It comes off of their second EP, expected to come out in the near future. They’ve had a busy year, playing headlining sets to increasingly large and enthusiastic crowds. If you dig getting warped and discovering another side of yourself, you won’t want to miss Pretty. So explore all this band has to offer in our Five Questions With segment here

Two

Making it into this week’s list of music will be a British Colombian-based and South African-born Auret Esselen, aka LiAura. She has revealed her latest single under this new moniker, a remarkable reimagining of the AC/DC classic, “Thunderstruck.” But, of course, her version takes the listener on an orchestral journey of a familiar song. LiAura’s stunningly powerful vocals evoke a new depth in this iconic rock classic. It is available across all streaming platforms you listen to your music on. You should also read our review of the new single here

The final recommendation of new music I have for you this week is from Montreal-based producer and songwriter AZËE. Who embodies the feeling of love that makes you feel secure and happy in his latest single. A song called “Close Your Eyes” featuring vocals from singer J.O.Y. Their vocals are accompanied by encouraging lyrics and an upbeat, dreamy EDM beat. It encourages the listener to dance and relax; the song can be considered a lullaby hidden in a dance track. On the surface, it can seem like any other pop song about romantic love. But AZËE sheds new light, showing that those feelings can come from loyal friends and family members.
