Nova Scotia alt-rocker Elyse Aeryn shares her long-awaited debut album, Joy State of Mind

“I’m about to realize a dream that became clear when I could get quiet enough to hear my own voice, and confident enough to listen,” said Elyse Aeryn (she/her). “That is what Joy State of Mind is all about – the unlocking of your personal power through deconditioning to change how you give and receive energy.”

The 8-song release was co-produced by Aeryn and engineer Jamie Foulds (Soundpark Studios); the album begins with the focus track, “Criminal.” This particular track features an infectious rhythm and relatable lyrics about being the bigger person.

The lyrics, “It’s ok, If you put the blame on me, If it helps you sleep, I’ll be the criminal,” is not only catchy, it evokes a sense of integrity and class.

“‘Criminal’ is the ultimate ‘I’m done’ song, for anyone who has ever felt like it was easier to take the blame than explain yourself, knowing your words are falling on deaf ears,” she said.

The two previous singles, “Under My Skin” and “Cherries” are both perfect introductions for new listeners, showcasing Elyse’s talent in various styles and genres.

Closing the album, “Colour of You,” shows a softer side of Elyse, this time with pop and country components, making this track one that will appeal to fans of various genres. Elyse’s vocals on this track shine, and the poetic lyrics quickly embed themselves in your brain.

The feeling throughout the song is cheery and joyful and showcases Elyse’s vocal stylings.

Overall, Joy State of Mind is a perfect introduction to an up-and-coming East Coast artist with a long career ahead of her. Elyse easily blends genres, creating a unique sound that is nostalgic, fresh, and relatable.
