Vancouver International Jazz Festival Announces Granville Island Jazz Programming at Performance Works – PLUS – New ROAMER Pass for 2023 

Coastal Jazz & Blues Society is pleased to announce the slate of Performance Works shows as part of this year’s Granville Island Jazz at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Performance Works, located at 1218 Cartwright Street, will host seven artists between June 24 – July 2, 2023. Also new this year is the ROAMER Pass that provides access* to Granville Island Jazz ticketed shows at Performance Works, Ocean Artworks, and the Revue Stage.

Presale tickets for Festival donors, including the ROAMER Pass, are available at www.coastaljazz.ca on March 21 at 10:00 am PDT. Tickets will be available to the general public on March 23 at 10:00 am PDT.

The 2023 Granville Island Jazz Performance Works line-up for Performance Works features the following artists. All tickets are $34 plus fees; showtimes for each are 7:30 pm.

The Ostara Project, June 25 – Known as a Jazz “supergroup,” The Ostara Project calls on a Who’s-Who of top-tier musicians, composers, and bandleaders of Canadian women in jazz spearheaded by Jodi Proznick on bass and Amanda Tosoff on piano.

Sona Jobarteh, June 28 – West Africa’s very first female Kora virtuoso, Sona Jobarteh, is a deft innovator who “blends traditional music, blues, and Afropop to impressive effect” (The Guardian) while also leading activism for social change in Africa.

Brandee Younger Trio, June 29 – A leading light in modern jazz, harpist Brandee Younger was the first Black female solo artist to be nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Instrumental Composition and has worked with some of the biggest names in contemporary music (John Legend, The Roots, Lauryn Hill).

Pura Fé & Jesse Zubot: Chamber of Bones, June 30 – Pura Fé is an artist, activist, and storyteller of Tuscarora and Taino heritage, known for her impassioned vocals, slide guitar fireworks, and powerful songs that touch on folk, gospel, and blues traditions. She’ll perform with an ensemble featuring virtuosic violinist and composer Jesse Zubot.

Isaiah Collier &  The Chosen Few, July 1 – Chicago/Brooklyn-based saxophonist Isaiah Collier with The Chosen Few are making some of modern music’s most ecstatic, surging, and transportive sonic statements.
Nduduzo Makhathini, July 2 – A central figure in South Africa’s vibrant jazz scene, Nduduzo Makhathini’s ambitious music is an act of cultural reclamation and spiritual communion.

The new ROAMER Pass will provide access* to shows at all Granville Island Jazz venues during the Festival. For $295, pass holders can gain entry to a total of 22 shows between June 23 – July 2, 2023, across Performance Works, Ocean Artworks, and the Revue Stage.

Roamer Pass holders also receive the following:
-One (1) drink ticket per day good for use at any Granville Island Jazz venue (Performance Works, Ocean Artworks, Revue Stage) during the 2023 Festival
-10% off tickets for 2023 Festival Marquee Shows at Queen Elizabeth Theatre and Vancouver Playhouse

*Access to Sun Ra Arkestra is not included in the ROAMER Pass.

The 38th edition of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival will offer 140 shows, including more than 50 free performances from June 23 to July 2, 2023. The Festival kicks off with a free Downtown Jazz concert series outside the Vancouver Art Gallery and šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square. It includes marquee shows at Queen Elizabeth Theatre and The Playhouse, club shows at various downtown venues, and culminates on Canada Day weekend at Granville Island venues, including Performance Works, Ocean Art Works, and the Revue Stage.
