The Montreal-based young singer-songwriter Dylan Gitalis has unveiled his five-song EP, frost —a batch of songs exploring the themes of loss, isolation, and venturing into the world, perhaps leaving a warm and simple life behind.

“My intention with this EP is to create something that might be healing, and refueling for me and for others as we move through the waves of life,” Dylan says. “I hope that it might serve as a recluse for you, or that it might help you feel less alone on a dark night.”

frost begins with the title track, a fragmented memory that has stuck with Dylan since he was eight years old. On the way to his grandmother’s funeral, he remembers his brother etching a strange creature on the frosted window of the car window.

“Frosted Windows” begins with a full, upbeat melody, which is joined by Dylan’s vocals and guest vocals, creating a beautiful duet. The harmonious vocals complement each other and blend together perfectly. Like any good folk song, “Frosted Windows” tells an authentic, heartfelt story. The track expands on the memory mentioned above, which profoundly affected Dylan, becoming somewhat of a Rorschach test he uses to talk about death, pain, and the frozen feeling you get when someone is no longer there.

On the fourth track, “Alone,” Dylan is joined by Liv Kanoa. From the beginning, the track gave me chills. Both the instrumentation and vocals capture the listener’s attention and leave a lasting impact. “Alone” is nothing short of a powerful musical experience, showcasing two performers working together in harmony and evoking a sense of chemistry.

Closing out the EP, the previous single, “Surrender,” is about trusting your instincts and intuition and rolling with the punches life and the universe throw at you.

Although only five songs, this EP gives a clear vision of what Dylan has to offer, both as a songwriter and artist, while also showing the listener his various layers of talent.
