Halifax-based D’Ambrosia lingers on the “Sweet Maybe”
Halifax, NS-based D’Ambrosia has unveiled the brand new single, “Sweet Maybe.”
“‘Sweet Maybe’ is meant to convey the experience of a reluctance to commit, in our current culture of dating apps, casual hook-ups and on-again off-again relationships,” said vocalist Kim D’Ambrogi (she/her). “This song is from the perspective of the recipient of that ‘sweet maybe,’ with the tenuous balance between the hope and frustration of what that word represents. It can be enough to keep us holding on but not enough to feel fulfilled.”
Coupling a rocky edge with a tongue-in-cheek, yet vulnerable narrative, the single alludes to the experience of floating between a “Yes” or “No” by that fateful little hook of a word, “Maybe.”
Review
“Sweet Maybe” is a laid-back, mellow pop track with a chilled-out vibe.
Kim’s vocals are front and center on this release and reminiscent of well-known artists, Sheryl Crow and, at times, Jewel, but also pulling forth influence from classic rock greats.
The lyrics, “Oh Baby, Sweet Baby, You keep on telling me Maybe’, Oh and it’s bringing me down, You’re wearing me out,” convey a sense of emotional turmoil and uncertainty in a romantic relationship, which I’m sure a good many of us can relate to.
Overall, “Sweet Maybe” is the kind of song that you can listen to on repeat for hours, letting its gentle melodies wash over you and carry you away.
