Miesha and The Spanks Drop Punk-Fueled “Mom Genes // Mom Jeans” Single & Video
Calgary-based garage-rock duo Miesha and The Spanks have released a new punk-fueled, hand-clappin’ single and video titled “Mom Jeans // Mom Genes.” The track comes on the heels of the anthemic “It’s My Year” and is featured on their forthcoming full-length album, Unconditional Love In Hi-Fi, out via Mint Records on April 14, 2023.
Filmed and directed by The Spanks’ fierce leader and mother of twin boys – the video features Miesha Louie spiraling over the yawning abyss of parenthood, stalking her own distorted self-image through a maternity ward of distorted guitars and percussionist Sean Hamilton’s cyclical rhythm. Clad in the unironic reality of a new silhouette and the expectations that come with it, Louie struts her stretch mark stripes like a tiger-mom in the flesh while each verse and chorus celebrates a sacrifice to a higher purpose while longing for a carefree past.
As the duo sings, we get an inside look of Louie’s other part of life through clips of her young twins. With the punk vocals and intense bass, the duo demonstrates the parallels of their music chaos of parenthood, juggling her life and her kids’ needs. She sings: “Mom genes for the babe who won’t sleep at night / Mom genes for the kid who wants to put up another fight / Mom genes for the mom times that we’ve lost / Mom jeans for the mom bod that I’ve got.”
As fans of David Lynch’s 1977 cult-classic Eraserhead, OCL Studio’s Recording Engineer, Josh Rob Gwilliam and Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel Mastering knew exactly how to approach “Mom Jeans // Mom Genes,” lending their support to this unique expression of female energy and pride.
“It’s more than just about the new mom-fit jeans that I’m wearing though, that’s just the metaphor,” explains Louie. “It’s also the super tough mom genes that get us through that day to day of ups and downs and emotional manipulations and breakthroughs and pure joy that come with our role as matriarch. My babies were a great gift to me and I wouldn’t change anything, but as I try to balance motherhood with everything that I had before, things can’t help but fall off the scales. Moms are just out here doing their best, loving their babies, and trying to make time for loving themselves too.”
