Jenn Grant has shared the second single and video, “How I Loved You,” to be taken from her forthcoming all-Canadian collaboration album Champagne Problems. Jenn also announced that the album would be released on June 21st and revealed the stellar list of collaborators on this gem-filled album. These collaborations include Kim Harris, Aquakultre, Basia Bulat, Bahamas, Dan Mangan, Hannah Georgas with Amy Millan, Kevin Drew, Ria Mae, Josh Qaumariaq, Slow Leaves, Joel Plaskett, and Tim Baker.
“How I Loved You” was written with Hannah Georgas and follows the debut single “Judy” featuring Kim Harris, which has already become an earworm for many and spent several weeks on the CBC Top 20. Stars’ Amy Millan joined Hannah and Jenn on the recording and features in the bewitching cinematic film for the song which was directed by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew.
On the song and film clip, Jenn says:
“I have been thinking a lot about the idea of heartbreak lately, and how we try to cover up the pain and the joy that led to it just to feel nothing at all. And that maybe it is better to feel everything rather than nothing. Maybe we do not need to forget, and we just need to feel. Because it is the reason humans are together on this earth. To fall in love, to break apart, to feel, cry, grieve, and grow stronger. This is what love is to me.
This song is going to break your heart as it did mine. And the video is the magical element that brings it to life. Working with Kevin Drew on this video was one of the greatest joys of my career to date. Kevin is a born creative leader. He brings people together and he digs the best out of you. He pushes me in exciting ways and makes me believe that what we are bound to create is worth fighting for.”
Amy Millan goes on to say:
“Prepare for listening to “How I Loved You” by being alone. This way you may cry like you have to, want to and need to for as long as you can remember. Then you can listen to it 17-1700 times consecutively and cry a little more. That’s what happened to me anyway.”
Kevin Drew and Jenn began to write together during the lockdowns of 2020, resulting in one of their collaborations featuring on Champagne Problems. After sharing the final record with Kevin, he fell in love with the track “How I Loved You” and offered to direct the music video.
On the song and process, Kevin said:
“When I heard this song for the first time it pushed me into the emotion of thievery around the heart. The constant cycle of what’s been stolen from us and what we have stolen from others. Hearts and robbers. That was the idea we set out to make. Hearts and robbers.”
Recorded and produced by Jenn and her longtime collaborator and husband Daniel Ledwell at Lake Echo, Nova Scotia, Champagne Problems is set for release on June 21st.

I grew up in Alberta, but spent most of my life in British Columbia – I also spent a lot of my summers in Britain as I was lucky enough to have immigrant parents with the capital to go visit our relatives. The amount of time I spent overseas makes it hard for me to say I feel fully Canadian, but it does make me feel typically Canadian as so many of us have mixed parentage. My parents defined another divide in me as I feel inexorably pulled to both science and the art; my father being a doctor and my mother being a school teacher. I studied both in university and now work on making healthcare software during the day, then write/read/draw/paint/dance in my evenings. My global wanderings, my education, and the fact that my appetite for media could be described as ‘voracious’ means my frame of reference is pretty varied. It’s hard to say that I have a favourite music genre, rather I am always seeking sounds that convey a sense earnestness an honesty.
