Little Misty – “Windmill” (Single Review)

Little Misty

Little Misty share their first single, “Windmill” from their upcoming album

Montreal Indie-Folk band Little Misty has unveiled their single, “Windmill,” the first single off their forthcoming album.

This song is a story crafted from the point of view of the old windmill on the hill, which witnesses generations pass by as he keeps spinning through the seasons. Kathryn and François deliver delicate and captivating vocals paired with dynamic instrumental composition, “Windmill” highlights Little Misty’s undeniable talent and what’s in store for the new album.

Little Misty is an indie-folk band founded in Montreal, Quebec, led by Kathryn Samman (vocals) and François Jalbert (guitar). Although firmly grounded in folk music, their repertoire mixes indie-rock with more broad compositions. From cinematic landscapes to wailing guitar solos, the group explores a full range of musical possibilities, always searching for innovative ways to serve their storytelling.

They surrounded themselves with some of the finest musicians in town, including Tommy Gauthier on violin, Cédric Dind-Lavoie on bass, and Mark Nelson on drums. After releasing their first eponymous record in 2020, the group surprisingly managed to tour between the waves and write and produce a second album, Nowhere Land, which is set to be released in April 2023.

“Windmill” by Little Misty is a folk-inspired track that begins with melodious vocal blending and serene instrumentation.

One of the notable strengths of “Windmill” is Little Misty’s vocal performance, which is emotive and expressive throughout the track.

The lyrics transport the listener to that windmill atop that golden hill. The chorus, “Dear old friend is this the land you watch upon as you dance, Each season spinning free with the wind,” is catchy and straightforward while at the same time evoking feelings of nostalgia.

If this track indicates what’s to come from Little Misty’s album, I’m eager to hear more.
