Nothing can convince country songstress Kalsey Kulyk to rekindle an old flame – not even whiskey – in her latest tempo release, “Ain’t Enough Whiskey.”
Co-written by Kulyk with Troy Johnson and Scott Lindsay and produced by Bart McKay (Brett Kissel, Gord Bamford), the barn burner, anti-ex anthem offers a fun, lighthearted spin on putting your foot down with a former love.
“As soon as I walked out of writing ‘Ain’t Enough Whiskey,’ I knew I wanted to record it,” says Kulyk of the tune. “It was such a fun, upbeat and catchy song that I just loved. It’s also super relatable, cause who doesn’t love throwin’ a dog at someone who did you wrong?”
I got the idea when I was at a bar downtown in Nashville when I first moved there. My friends invited me out, and I wasn’t planning on drinking cause I’m not a big drinker. But they were all drinking, and one of them bought everyone shots of whiskey, and I said no thanks – but they were like, “you just moved to Nashville, it’s a right of passage” – so I went for it (keep in mind that I had only ever had honey whiskey before, so I thought that’s what it tasted like). So, we all went to take the shot, and I shot mine back out all over the bar cause it was NOT what I expected. Then my friend turned to me and said, “Well, I’m never buying you whiskey again cause there ain’t enough whiskey in this bar for you to be wasting it like that.” I thought, “Hey – that’s a song.” So I took it into the writer’s room a while later, and we wrote this song.
Troy and Scott were the other songwriters. I wrote a couple of times with them, and we always seemed to get a good, upbeat, fun song. They are nice guys and great writers!
I actually worked with Bart McKay before when I was 15, and now again with my new batch of songs. He’s one of the best! Super nice guy, easy to work with, great ideas, and no ego for someone with so much success.
I’ve always had a pretty upbeat, fun live show, but the songs I put out previously were pretty slow and sad, which didn’t match my live show… So I figured if I wanted to have a cohesive brand, I better record some songs to match my live show and get a more balanced recorded sound.
Sometimes personal experiences, sometimes stories I read, and sometimes it’s just pure imagination. It really depends on the day.
We have a few more songs recorded and ready to go for this year, and we’re going back into the studio to record more for a record. We’re gonna be playing more shows! It’s gonna be a really busy year, but it’s already looking to be the best one yet musically!
