Toronto-based Belgian producer/artist Alex Lustig returns with “Neo,” a collaboration with South Korean R&B artist SUMIN. The song’s title is a nod to SUMIN’s heritage, with ‘neo’ translating to ‘you’ in Korean. The track’s frenetic BPM paired with SUMIN’s vaporous vocals is simultaneously turbulent and calming, like falling down a rushing waterfall before landing in a depthless pool of sound.
“I love blending genres and wanted to mix Jungle & Drum and bass with my ambient sound to create something that still connected with me,” Alex shares. “I love having a deep meditative sound but yet still have energy with the drums. ‘Neo’ (meaning You in Korean) is the moment when our hearts start to flutter is like a shining starlight. SUMIN is singing calmly in voice on a sparkling drum beat. ‘I want to be with you day and night.'”
The accompanying music video was filmed in Toronto and features model Natasha Sharabura carrying a glowing orb around the city and basking in its comforting light.
“Neo” follows Alex’s single “Fade” featuring London singer Sølv. The track opens with a metronomic thrumming bass line before Sølv’s ghostly vocals, and atmospheric synths enter, creating an all-enveloping sonic experience.
Both tracks appear on Alex’s forthcoming album Fate (B-Sides), the follow-up to his 2022 album Fate, and sees Alex opting for a more upbeat spin on his ambient fusion sound. Alex first started listening to ambient music as a way to deal with his anxiety, finding a place of calming confidence in tranquil compositions. His upcoming album Fate (B-Sides) marks both his personal and professional growth.
“I love warm analog pads,” Alex says. “My goal is to always add depth to whatever sound I’m trying to create, to get lost in that world.”
