Phil Marinucci shares on his new track, “Fly”

Toronto, ON-based Phil Marinucci has recently unveiled his new track, “Fly,” which pays homage to AOR rock music of the 80s, written and arranged to sound like music from that era; including elements such as vocal stacking, guitar stacking, harmony vocals, big production sound and more.

In order to create that 80s-era sound, along with a big production feel, the song was built with over 130 layers of instruments and vocal tracks. All instruments were virtual and performed on an M-Audio MIDI keyboard. Some instrument sequences were also programmed, like the drum and complex background melodies.

Since the track was developed during the pandemic, the lyrics were rewritten to create a more uplifting and positive message to help those who needed it. Once the track was complete, it was mixed, mastered, and distributed worldwide through TuneCore. PMM also created the artwork for the single, again following the 80s aesthetic during that timeframe.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Phil Marinucci. I’m a multimedia/marketing developer and musician from Toronto, Canada. For most of my career, I’ve been involved in graphic/web design, film production, and marketing. In the last five years or so, I’ve put more focus on music for both myself and my clients. My first release was in 2018, an EDM trance track called “321.”

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

The new track “FLY” pays homage to AOR rock music of the 80s, written and arranged to sound like music from that era, including song traits like vocal stacking, guitar stacking, harmony vocals, lots of keyboard work, big production sound, and more. The track was originally written in the 80s but was never produced. It was during the pandemic that the work resurfaced, and studio production began.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Most of the work I do is for clients, so when I’m writing that material, I already have a goal in mind in terms of sound and style, usually for film production. With “FLY,” the inspiration to write was from nearly three decades ago when I was heavily influenced by AOR bands at that time (i.e., Journey, ASIA, Queen, Boston, etc.). New material today usually happens in front of a MIDI keyboard, where I experiment and record ideas for future projects.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

I don’t do live shows. I’m primarily a studio musician. Aside from writing and recording the material, I enjoy the production, mixing, and mastering of the track. Of course, focusing on all the minor details in a track can be time-consuming. It took nearly two years to complete ‘FLY’ because of all the complexities in building out the track (along with having to work during the days, allocating my spare time to the project).

What’s your goal for 2023?

Right now, I’m enjoying promoting “FLY.” It’s given me the opportunity to connect with all kinds of people, share stories, recording techniques, etc. Since the track was developed during the pandemic, the lyrics were rewritten to create a more uplifting and positive message to help those who needed it. There are plans in June to work with a local charity. Will be using the positive messaging in “FLY” along with the album graphics to produce t-shirts; with all proceeds going to support mental health organizations.
