Burn The Louvre – Silhouettes (Album Review)

Burn The Louvre

Hamilton, ON-based duo, Burn The Louvre is certainly no stranger to Canadian Beats. They individually released each of the 11 tracks from Silhouettes as singles before the album release, and we covered most of them. A few of my favourites were “Hey Stacey,” “Lost With You,” and “Nice Guy.”

One thing I have always loved about Burn The Louvre is the lead singer, Jordan Speare’s vocals. Through the different songs they’ve released, he has shared various vocal stylings, all of which are unique but also fun and appealing.

The album opens with the title track, “Silhouettes,” which is a perfect introduction for a new listener—beginning with a beat that won’t stop, which is then joined by Jordan’s vocals, which fuse together perfectly. Through the song, the listener gets to experience the diversity in Jordan’s vocal talents. The lyrics, “Disinterested until I heard her say, So nice to finally meet you, Autumn eyes and sweet perfume, My heart might have skipped just a beat or two, That little black dress and those ruby shoes, Okay is all that I could say, I sense there’s heartache on the way,” caught my attention. I love the way it’s sung, and brought a smile to my face when I heard, “Okay is all that I could say.

The band shares,

“I am a huge fan of The Last Shadow Puppets, so they inspired the mood and the music. I had the chord progression with all the little hammer-ons for “Silhouettes” figured out a few months prior to me and my first girlfriend breaking up back when I was 24,” recalls Speare, “and then when it finally happened, I wrote the lyrics to this and finished the whole song in a matter of days. It was actually extremely therapeutic to organize my thoughts like that, I didn’t really even have to go back and edit this one much, my 1st draft was almost spot-on,” he smiled before adding, “feel free to insert some cliché here about speaking from the heart.”

Closing the album, “Honolulu” showcases another side of the duo’s sound. The song includes a mellow ukelele, along with guitars and percussion, and it’s fantastic. The vocals on this track offer a lighter tone. The lyrics throughout have a sense of whimsy, such as “She was standing by herself, next to her friend, She had me mesmerized with those angelic eyes, Before I knew it she was living in my head, Well she’s got hair that goes for days and days and nights, A body made in outer space, oh and lips that taste like the summertime,” I have to admit; I played this song repeatedly because I just couldn’t get enough. I would love to hear more of this style from the band.  Closing with “Oh Honolulu, Feels So Far Away, Why You So Far Away?,” you’re left in a moment of sadness because the song is done and because Honolulu is, in fact, far away.

Jordan shares,

“Okay, so “Honolulu” is a song I wrote for my first girlfriend Gillian for her birthday. We’d always joked about running away to Honolulu one day, so I wrote this song about the idea of doing just that,” explained lead singer Jordan Speare, “to be honest, I really wasn’t the best boyfriend, but I did some things right and this song is definitely one of them. After opening the album with “Silhouettes”, which is a song about the aftermath of our relationship from my perspective, I felt it was fitting to close the album with “Honolulu”, a song about when times were great.”

I would highly recommend you check out the whole album, as I can’t say enough good things about this up-and-coming Canadian duo, and you just need to hear it for yourself.
