Lesley Pike shares “Paper Thin” ahead of her upcoming album, Wild
Lesley Pike’s upcoming album, Wild, focuses on the resilience that comes after pain. Ahead of its October 28th release, she has shared her single, “Paper Thin,” written with folk duo The Dunwells, a fragile yet hopeful reflection on a couple’s fight that Pike overheard while staying at a hotel one night in Leeds, England.
“Oh god, have I ever sounded like this?” Pike asked herself as she tried to catch some sleep. The next morning, she and The Dunwells set out to write a song that feels tender but also quite optimistic and hopeful.
Delicate lap steel guitar and Pike’s vocal at the forefront tell a story of comparison and the shifting perceptions of conflict that come from overhearing such a personal row between strangers.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I am Lesley of the Pike clan 🙂 Small-town Canadian gal currently living in London, UK. Classical pianist-turned-folk-singer.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
I was staying in a hotel in Leeds while working with (British indie-folk duo) The Dunwells, and in the wee hours, I was awoken by a couple having a horrible shouting match in the next room. In addition to keeping me up all night, it really got me thinking about conflict, what it means, and where it comes from. When I got to the studio in the morning – bleary-eyed but strangely inspired – we had a fascinating conversation about relationship dynamics and wrote “Paper Thin” right after that.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
Everything I write is sparked or inspired by really specific moments that I either experienced personally or have a personal connection to. On this album, the inspiration ranges from the aforementioned hotel incident to being deeply moved by a play I saw in London, to a little girl helping a beetle that was stuck in the grass, to being ghosted by a romantic partner. Sometimes it’s the seemingly smallest thing, but something about that moment and how it felt sticks with me, and I feel compelled to write about it.
Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you’d like to tell us about?
We are working on a special Toronto show around the album release, and I’ll be touring in the UK in November / December. Looking forward to lots of touring in Canada and abroad in 2023.
What’s your goal for 2022?
My two big goals for 2022 were to be able to record and produce my own songs at home and to finish and release my album before the end of the year. Both felt very daunting in January, but happy to say it looks like both are happening as the album will be out later this year.
