Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi! I’m Emma Hewson, a Toronto-based musician who both teaches music and creates her own music. After over 15 years of writing songs, I finally feel like I’ve found my creative voice by embracing my multidisciplinary interests and blending them together.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“Be Still” embodies the delicious feeling of falling into bed with your partner after a long day, allowing yourselves to rest in each other’s arms. The track sounds like a 2022 version of the Spice Girls if they shagged a jazz musician and then recorded a song about it in their bedroom studio. Prepare to float away while listening to “Be Still,” and don’t forget to watch the time-lapse video showing how the art was made!

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Inspiration, to me, is not really consequential in my process. Like any other practice, the real meat of the matter comes from the consistent dedication to the art. Whether that’s writing alone at my piano, producing music in the production club I’m part of, or playing in other people’s bands, inspiration is abundant. So I think less about inspiration and more about, “am I showing up to do the work? to my purpose?”

Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you’d like to tell us about?

What I’m most excited for people to know about is that ‘Be Still’ is the first in a series of six songs and videos I’ll be releasing over the next six months. There will be four more time-lapse music videos and a final presentation at the start of 2023 with a live music video screening as well as a performance! I’m extremely excited to show the world this series I’ve created, not only because I’m proud of it but also because I think it has some important messages that need to be heard.

What’s your goal for 2022?

My goal for 2022 is to continue to show my work and engage with my community in ways that are enriching, sustainable, and mutually nourishing. Thank you for reading and listening!
